How long is my US visa valid for?

Ugh, it’s so confusing, isn’t it? That ten-year stamp on my B-1/B-2 visa makes me feel like I’ve won the lottery… until I remember it’s not really ten whole years. More like ten years of six-month visits. Talk about a tease! Six months goes by so fast. Like, last summer, I finally made it to that amazing jazz festival in New Orleans – something I’d been wanting to do forever! – and bam! Suddenly my six months were up. I had to pack my bags and leave just when I was starting to feel settled. So frustrating!

It says ten years, but… you know. It’s kind of a trick. They let you in for six months at a time, max. I heard someone say it’s because they want to make sure you’re not trying to live here permanently without going through the proper channels. Which, fair enough, I guess. Still, six months? It feels so short. Sometimes I think about using the Visa Waiver Program for those quick trips. Like, maybe just popping over for a conference or a family wedding? Less paperwork is definitely appealing, although I think you can only stay for 90 days that way. Still better than nothing, maybe? But honestly, even six months sometimes feels like a blink. There’s so much to see and do! Wouldn’t it be amazing to just… stay longer? sigh
