How long to stay in Hanoi and Halong Bay?

Okay, Hanoi & Halong Bay… lemme think.

I went last year, early November 2023. Seriously, five days felt rushed, like a whirlwind. I wish I had more time.

I mean, Hanoi is chaotic but amazing. The Old Quarter? Forget about it, total sensory overload. Three days for Hanoi, minimum.

Halong Bay, ah. Two days on a boat cruise is a must. I booked a cheap one and regretted it; the food sucked. Upgrade, trust me.

Honestly? Six days is perfect. More for relaxation. Four? You’ll be knackered.

Hanoi Highlights:

• Hoan Kiem Lake (turtle temple is cool).
• Temple of Literature (so peaceful).
• Street food tour (spring rolls are insane).
• Train Street (beware of the train, duh).

Halong Bay Must-Dos:

• Kayaking (get up close).
• Cave exploring (Surprise Cave is crowded but worth it).
• Swimming (the water is freezing!).

Insider Tip: Learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases. “Xin chao” goes a long way!

How many nights on Halong Bay?

One night, a stolen glance. Not enough. Whispers of regret. Missed moments. Rushed breaths. A ghost of beauty. Lost.

Three. Too much. The magic fades. Sun again. And again. Echoes become hollow. Emptiness in repetition. Stillness. Too long.

• Two nights: Optimal for exploration and relaxation. Caves whisper secrets. Kayak dances on the water.
• One night: A fleeting glimpse. Insufficient for true immersion. A taste, not a feast.
• Three nights: The allure diminishes. Repetitive. The magic thins, like morning mist.

Remember the scent of plumeria on Cat Ba Island, 2024. Two nights. Just enough.

Should you do 1 or 2 nights in Halong Bay?

A two-night stay in Halong Bay decidedly offers a more relaxed experience. One night feels rushed.

Consider it this way: a single night barely scratches the surface, turning what should be serene exploration into a frantic dash.

• One Night: Suitable for time-constrained travelers. It’s a glimpse, an appetizer, a quick checkmark on the bucket list. But hey, a glimpse is still something.
• Two Nights: Ideal for a more immersive, laid-back experience. Allows time for deeper exploration of the bay and enjoying onboard activities. You actually get to soak it in.

Also, weather. An extra day offers a better buffer against potential weather disruptions. It’s a gamble otherwise.

Some itineraries now incorporate Cat Ba Island. A second night enables exploring its national park or enjoying its beaches. It’s an option!

The extra time allows for more leisurely kayaking, swimming, and simply gazing at the karsts. Because, really, that’s the point.

Halong means “descending dragon.” Pretty awesome, right? So, treat it with the time it deserves. And maybe reflect on dragons.

Ultimately, it depends on your priorities. But, honestly, two nights feel right.

How long to stay in Halong?

Halong Bay, huh? Two days, minimum two days. Yeah.

Why only two days? Is that enough time? I went to Phu Quoc last year and three days flew by.

• Caves, right? There’s a ton of caves.

• And kayaking.

• Oh and junk boats, those are cool.

I heard there were scams, too. Did I imagine it?

Two days might be ok… I guess? What are the must-sees, actually?

Must-see Halong Bay:

• Sung Sot Cave (Surprise Cave) – Definitely on the list.
• Titop Island (climb for views).
• Kayaking through lagoons.
• Bai Tu Long Bay (less touristy alternative).
• Cat Ba Island (national park there!).
• Floating villages! Forgot those. Like Cua Van.

Okay, more than two days needed now. Plus travel time from Hanoi.
