Thailand requires 20,000 THB cash on entry for tourists.

Crazy, right? I landed in Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) last May 15th and totally forgot about this. Nearly had a heart attack at immigration. Luckily, I scrounged up enough baht and USD between my wallet and backpack.

It was about $550 at the time. They didn’t seem to care about the mix of currencies, thankfully. I was so stressed, thinking I’d be sent back. What a way to start a trip.

Later, in Chiang Mai, I chatted with a fellow traveler who said they weren’t even asked. Happened to me again on my next trip, October 27th, same airport. Didn’t ask for proof of funds then either.

Seems totally random, I think? I always bring enough just in case though. Learned my lesson. Better safe than sorry, especially since I’m planning a Phuket trip next February.

Do I need to take cash to Thailand?

Landed Suvarnabhumi, Bangkok, July 2023. Sweaty, tired. Immigration line snaked forever. No one asked me for cash. Passport, onward ticket, done. My friend? Stopped. Freaked out. Didn’t have 20,000 baht. Pulled out credit cards, explained. Let him through. Pure luck.

• Don’t risk it. Carry the cash or equivalent in USD/EUR just in case. Peace of mind.
• Exchanging currency at the airport? Rates are terrible. Better options in the city. Super Rich, for example.
• I use my Revolut card. Amazing exchange rates. Works everywhere. Even street food stalls have QR codes now. So convenient.
• Visa or visa exempt? The rule theoretically applies to both.
• Not enforced often. But why risk a ruined trip?
• I travel light. One small backpack. 20,000 baht felt like a brick. Hid it deep. Paranoid.
• Saw a guy argue with immigration. No cash. Don’t know what happened. Didn’t want to find out myself. Get the cash.

Flights, circles within circles, round trip ticket binding me. Fifteen days, the timeframe, a brief dance.

Finances, yes, finances, the hard currency. 10,000 baht, a magic number? Or is it 250 pounds? Enough to breathe? Enough to be?

• Passport Validity: Six months minimum. A safety net against time’s relentless march.
• Return Ticket: Proof of intention, a promise to return, always. Departure within fifteen days is strict.
• Financial Proof: 10,000 baht or equivalent in other currencies, about 250 pounds maybe. They want to ensure I can sustain myself. Is this the new normal?
