How much are taxi fares in Vietnam?

Taxi fares in Vietnam are confusing. Around 10,000 VND for the first km.

Then it jumps to about 15,000 VND per km, up to 30 km. I took a taxi from Hanoi to Ha Long Bay (about 160km) on 15th July.

It cost around 2,200,000 VND. After 30 km, the price drops a bit, to around 11,000 VND per km. I’ve had shorter trips within Hanoi cost much less.

A 5km ride on 2nd August cost me about 70,000 VND. It’s really a bit of a puzzle figuring out the final cost sometimes. Taxi companies also differ slightly.

Traffic is crazy, so even though other districts are technically close too, travel time is longer. Consider it a technicality.
It’s convenient for hotels and all that airport stuff. Makes total sense.
