How much does The Canadian sleeper train cost?

Sleeper train? More like a wallet-emptier train. Two thousand five hundred loonies?! For that price, I could buy a small used car. Heck, maybe two. And drive myself to Vancouver. Enjoy the scenery at my own pace. Stop for roadside poutine whenever my heart desires.

• Toronto to Vancouver? Think CAD $2500 (2024 prices). That’s like, a month’s rent in some places.
• Routes and seasons mess with the price. Sometimes up. Sometimes… well, still probably up. Like airline tickets.
• Consider flying. Seriously. Probably cheaper. Faster, too. Unless you really love trains. Or hate airports. My cat hates airports.

That train better have gold-plated toilets. And a personal chef. Serving lobster thermidor. At 2:00 AM. Because that’s what $2500 buys you these days, right? Last year I bought a kayak for less than that. And paddled around Lake Ontario. Saw some beavers. Good times. No lobster, though.

• Bring snacks. Train food is pricey. Trust me. I once paid $10 for a stale muffin on a train. A MUFFIN. It was smaller than my fist. My left fist, which is slightly smaller than my right.
• Pack entertainment. Unless staring at the Canadian wilderness for three days straight is your jam. I downloaded 8 seasons of a baking show once. For a 6-hour flight. Preparedness is key.

My friend Dave took the sleeper train once. Said the rocking put him to sleep. Like a baby. Except babies don’t usually snore like freight trains. He also said the coffee was weak. And expensive. Why So Expensive?

Well, think about it. These trips arent just train rides.

• It covers long distance, fuel is high.

• Meals, and those can be pricey. I’ve been to Banff, it’s not cheap!
• Guided tours at each stop.
• Think about that view!
• Someone planning EVERYTHING for you.

You could probly do it cheaper yourself if you really researched, but yeah, way more effort. I would definately be too lazy. But, 6 grand? Woah!

Sleeper Plus… smaller. Cramped, even. Two people… feels like too much. Just a curtain. No real privacy. Shared bathroom down the hall… Never liked that.

Prestige… Bigger. Much bigger. Fifty percent… That’s a lot. Remember seeing the brochure… Window… huge. Like a wall of glass. Your own bathroom. A shower. Luxury… Almost forgot what that felt like.

Leather couch… Turns into a bed. Murphy bed they called it. Facing the window… Imagine waking up to that view. The stars… Maybe the city lights.
