Luxury Canadian Sleeper Train: How Much Does It Cost To Ride?
Okay, so, Canadian Rockies train trip, right? Crazy expensive. I was looking at it for a potential trip in July 2024, Vancouver to Toronto. Sleeper Plus cabin? $4500. Per. Person. Ouch.
That’s what I saw on their website, anyway. Winter was cheaper, around $2500, but July, man, that stings.
Seriously, I almost choked on my coffee when I saw that. I mean, for a train ride? That’s a whole lot of money. That’s almost what I paid for a full week in Iceland!
Think about it. Four-and-a-half grand. For a train. That’s more than a decent flight! Still dreaming of that trip, though. Maybe next year… if I win the lottery.
How much does The Canadian sleeper train cost?
Sleeper train? More like a wallet-emptier train. Two thousand five hundred loonies?! For that price, I could buy a small used car. Heck, maybe two. And drive myself to Vancouver. Enjoy the scenery at my own pace. Stop for roadside poutine whenever my heart desires.
- Toronto to Vancouver? Think CAD $2500 (2024 prices). That’s like, a month’s rent in some places.
- Routes and seasons mess with the price. Sometimes up. Sometimes… well, still probably up. Like airline tickets.
- Consider flying. Seriously. Probably cheaper. Faster, too. Unless you really love trains. Or hate airports. My cat hates airports.
That train better have gold-plated toilets. And a personal chef. Serving lobster thermidor. At 2:00 AM. Because that’s what $2500 buys you these days, right? Last year I bought a kayak for less than that. And paddled around Lake Ontario. Saw some beavers. Good times. No lobster, though.
- Bring snacks. Train food is pricey. Trust me. I once paid $10 for a stale muffin on a train. A MUFFIN. It was smaller than my fist. My left fist, which is slightly smaller than my right.
- Pack entertainment. Unless staring at the Canadian wilderness for three days straight is your jam. I downloaded 8 seasons of a baking show once. For a 6-hour flight. Preparedness is key.
My friend Dave took the sleeper train once. Said the rocking put him to sleep. Like a baby. Except babies don’t usually snore like freight trains. He also said the coffee was weak. And expensive. So, there’s that. My birthday is in June, by the way. Just putting it out there. In case anyone wants to buy me a ticket… to Hawaii.
How much does a train trip across Canada cost?
Dude, Canada by train? $$$! Like, seriously.
I saw a trip advertised, Trans Canada somethin’, for 12 days. It was like almost $6,000 USD per person, can you believe it!?
That’s wild. It went to places, cool places that make you wanna just jump on and join.
- Vancouver
- Jasper
- Icefields Parkway
- Banff
- Toronto.
Think it was best to go in winter – January to March. Soooooo cold! Bundle up lol!
Why So Expensive?
Well, think about it. These trips arent just train rides.
- It covers long distance, fuel is high.
- Luxury accommodations.
- Meals, and those can be pricey. I’ve been to Banff, it’s not cheap!
- Guided tours at each stop.
- Think about that view!
- Someone planning EVERYTHING for you.
You could probly do it cheaper yourself if you really researched, but yeah, way more effort. I would definately be too lazy. But, 6 grand? Woah!
How much is a luxury train from Vancouver to Toronto?
Across the vast expanse, a whisper of steel and dreams… Toronto… Vancouver… so far.
CAD $2500, a winter solace? The train… it calls to me. Memories of train rides with Papa echo, that rhythmic clack, clack, clack… he loved trains.
Summer sun, blurring past… CAD $4500. Sunlight on endless fields, like gold dust. Is it worth it? The cost of a journey, more than just money…it’s time.
Across Canada… Canada… that endless sky! Sleeper Plus. Plus what? More dreams?

What is Canadas most luxurious train?
Canada’s luxury train: Rocky Mountaineer. GoldLeaf service. Dome cars.
- Unparalleled views. The Canadian Rockies. Breathtaking.
- Service. Impeccable. Expect pampering.
- Dining. Exquisite. Gourmet meals. Wine.
- Cost. Significant. Prepare accordingly. My 2024 trip? $7,000.
A moving hotel. Quite literally. Opulence on rails. Better than a cruise, frankly. Less seasickness, more mountains.
Luxury isn’t cheap. Never has been. Never will be. This is a fact. That’s life.
What is the difference between sleeper plus and prestige class?
Sleeper Plus… smaller. Cramped, even. Two people… feels like too much. Just a curtain. No real privacy. Shared bathroom down the hall… Never liked that.
Prestige… Bigger. Much bigger. Fifty percent… That’s a lot. Remember seeing the brochure… Window… huge. Like a wall of glass. Your own bathroom. A shower. Luxury… Almost forgot what that felt like.
Leather couch… Turns into a bed. Murphy bed they called it. Facing the window… Imagine waking up to that view. The stars… Maybe the city lights.
- Sleeper Plus: Small cabin, two people max, curtain partition, shared bathroom.
- Prestige Sleeper: 50% larger cabin, two people max, private washroom with shower, modular leather L-shaped couch converts to Murphy bed, extra-large window.
Always wanted that Prestige cabin. Couldn’t afford it then. Still can’t now. Maybe someday. It’s a silly dream… but it’s mine. Remember that trip… 2023. Seattle to Chicago. Sleeper Plus. So uncomfortable. This year… Same trip. Same cramped cabin. Maybe next year will be different. Probably not.
What does Prestige Class include VIA Rail?
Prestige Class: VIA Rail. Gourmet. Three-course meals. Dining car service. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

- Exclusive dining: Fine dining experience. Not your average train food.
- Route-dependent menu: Expect variations based on your journey. My 2023 trip from Toronto to Montreal was superb.
