Okay, so three months in Southeast Asia, huh? Thirty bucks a day? Nah, that's way too tight. Unless you're, like, living in a hostel dorm and eating street food exclusively. Even then…

I'd say more like $1200-$1500 a month. That's just a guess but I'm pretty sure of this one. Food's cheap, yes, but you'll want some nice meals. And nicer accommodation occasionally. A proper bed is worth it.

Transportation adds up. Flights between countries. Buses, trains...sometimes taxis because, ugh, those night buses. Internal flights are surprisingly cheap sometimes though.

Activities? Temples? Island hopping? Diving? That's where your money goes, quick. Think about all that.

• Accommodation: $300-$600/month (mix of hostels and nicer places, obviously)
• Food: $300-$500/month (street food plus a few nicer restaurants)
• Activities: $300-$400/month (depending on how adventurous you are)
• Transportation: $300/month (give or take – that includes flights, I think)

So that's...$3,900 minimum to $4,500. Maybe more! I spent more last year, I think. It depends on where exactly in Southeast Asia you're going. Thailand's less expensive than Vietnam in my experience. But don't skimp. I regret some of the things I skipped to save money. I learned that lesson the hard way. This trip better be AMAZING. This time, I'm doing it right. I'm actually pretty sure this budget is realistic. What was I thinking last time?

Okay, so three months in Southeast Asia. Right, budget. Ugh. Food? £900-£1500, they say. That's doable, I guess, depending on how much street food versus fancy restaurants. I'm thinking mostly street food, obviously. Saving money is key! My goal is to eat like a local, not a tourist.

Transportation. £300-£1000. Crazy range! Depends entirely on how much I’m hopping around. Flights between countries? Buses? Trains? Gonna need to research specific routes. Definitely prioritize overnight buses to save on accommodation.

Activities? £500-£1,000. Way too much, I think. Temples, beaches, hikes... I can easily keep it under £500. I’m not into fancy tours. Plus, I’m planning on a lot of free activities anyway. Hiking is cheap!

Emergencies? £200-£500. Yikes. Better make it more. Medical insurance, for sure. Lost passport? That would be awful. Maybe £700. Better safe than sorry. Plus, you never know!

Total? £2600, maybe. To £3500 tops. Maybe even less, if I’m really careful. Man, I need to start saving. Seriously. Need to book flights soon. Vietnam first. Then Thailand. Indonesia possibly. Wow. So much to plan. Need visa info too. Ugh, paperwork.

Can you do Southeast Asia in 3 months?

Three months in Southeast Asia? Totally doable. I did it in 2023, actually, March to May. Crazy hot in Thailand, especially Bangkok. Seriously, the humidity was brutal. I sweat through three shirts a day. Man, I needed tons of water.

Vietnam was different. Sapa in the north was amazing. Beautiful rice terraces, gorgeous views. But Hanoi? So crowded. I loved the street food, though. The pho was the best thing ever. I ate it every day, almost.

The Philippines was my fave. El Nido, Palawan. Breathtaking. The beaches...oh my god. Turquoise water, white sand, the whole deal. I spent ages just swimming and snorkeling. Totally worth the long flight to get there. Expensive, though. But so worth it! The diving was incredible. Saw a whale shark!

• Thailand: March-April (Incredibly hot and humid)
• Vietnam: April-May (Sapa was amazing, Hanoi was packed)
• Philippines: May (El Nido was paradise, diving was awesome, expensive)

I wish I'd spent longer in Cambodia. Angkor Wat...it was on my list but I ran out of time. Next time, for sure. Maybe I'll add Laos, too.

Next time I go, I’ll definitely plan better. More time in Cambodia. Less time in Hanoi, maybe. More time for diving. Or maybe exploring the islands in the Philippines more. There’s so much more to see. It was life changing; seriously!
