How much money should I carry to Australia?
Australia has no currency limits for entry/exit. However, you must declare amounts exceeding AUD $10,000 (or equivalent). How much you should carry depends on your trip length, spending habits, and planned activities. Budget accordingly for accommodation, food, activities, and transport. Consider using cards for larger purchases.
How Much Cash Should I Bring to Australia?
Bringing cash to Australia? No limit, technically.
But heads up, mate! If you’re lugging around AUD 10,000 or more (or its foreign cash equivalent), you gotta declare it. Seriously.
Okay, so here’s my story. Back in June (think it was the 12th?) 2018, I flew into Sydney from London. Was super nervous ’cause I had a lot of Euros on me – enough to cover a down payment on a tiny apartment in Glebe (dream big, right?). Didn’t quite hit the 10k AUD mark, thankfully.
I’d read online about the declaration thing, and honestly, it scared me stiff. Can’t remember exact website…some govt site? I filled out the form, though, just in case I went past limit. Stress city, for real.
Anyways, went through customs, no probs. Honestly, probably overly worried. Just do what they say, declare it if you need to. It’s way better than them finding it and you getting, uh, questioned, a lot. I think customs looked at me strange cause I seemed nervis.
Moral of the story? Just declare it if you think you’re over the AUD 10,000 mark. Saved me a massive headache, that’s for sure. I almost forgot the decleration form. I almost was fined!
How much money should I have going to Australia?
Ah, Australia. Land of spiders that could write horror novels and sunshine so bright, it could probably power a small city.
So, how much moolah to bring?
-
At least $4,000-$5,000. Consider it “spider insurance”. Because seriously, those things are everywhere.
Think of it as your ‘roo repellent. Or maybe a down payment on a decent hat—the sun is no joke.

Job hunting is… unpredictable.
Unless you’ve already got a gig lined up, assume finding work is as easy as winning the lottery while juggling chainsaws. It could happen.

Unexpected expenses are a thing!
Like when I accidentally bought a boomerang thinking it was a fancy fan. Turns out, I’m terrible at boomerangs. Cost me a fortune and my dignity.
Here’s a thought. Boost that savings. Why? Because Australia is expensive! My last coffee there cost more than my first car (slight exaggeration). Plan for fun, plan for emergencies, and plan for regrettably overpriced souvenirs.
Oh, and don’t forget sunscreen. Seriously.
