Understanding the cancellation charges associated with confirmed train tickets is crucial, especially if you encounter unforeseen circumstances that necessitate a change of travel plans. The Indian Railways has established a framework for cancellation fees that vary based on the time of cancellation before the scheduled departure of the train.

Cancellation Fees within 48 to 12 Hours of Departure

If you cancel a confirmed train ticket within 48 hours but less than 12 hours prior to the scheduled departure, a cancellation fee of 25% of the base fare will be applicable. This fee is intended to compensate the Railways for the inconvenience caused due to the late cancellation.

Calculating the Cancellation Fee

To determine the cancellation fee, apply the following formula:

• *Cancellation Fee = 0.25 Base Fare**

For instance, if the base fare of your ticket is Rs. 500, the cancellation fee within 48 to 12 hours of departure would be Rs. 0.25 * 500 = Rs. 125.

Refund Amount

After deducting the cancellation fee, the remaining amount will be credited as a refund to your account. The refund amount is calculated as follows:

• Refund Amount = Ticket Fare - Cancellation Fee

Using the same example, if your ticket fare is Rs. 500 and the cancellation fee is Rs. 125, the refund amount would be Rs. 500 - Rs. 125 = Rs. 375.

Note:

• Cancellation charges are applied to the base fare of the ticket and do not include any additional charges such as reservation fees or GST.
• The cancellation fee is a flat percentage of the base fare and does not vary based on the distance of travel or class of accommodation.
• If you cancel your ticket more than 48 hours before departure, no cancellation fee will be applicable. However, a refund processing fee may be charged.
