Planning a Laos trip? Budget around $500-$800 for 7 days if you're on a tight budget. Mid-range travel: $800-$1500. Expect to spend $1500+ for luxury travel, factoring in accommodation, transport, activities, and dining.

Laos Trip Budget: How Much to Plan?

Okay, so Laos in July, right? Seven days. Man, that trip was awesome.

Food was cheap. I ate street food most days, maybe $10 a day. Sometimes more for a fancier meal, but mostly noodles and sticky rice – delicious.

Accommodation? I mixed it up. Couple nights in a guesthouse, super basic, maybe $15 a night. Then a nicer hotel for two nights, $50. The rest I was with friends, so we split a bungalow.

Transportation was mostly buses and tuk-tuks. Crazy cheap buses, seriously. Like, $2-5 for long rides. Tuk-tuks were more, maybe $5-10 depending on distance, definitely negotiable.

Total? Hmmm… let’s see… I spent around $700 total, including flights. But I’m a pretty budget-conscious traveler. My friends spent more, closer to $1000-1200, doing more touristy stuff.

So, $500-$1500 is a fair range, depending on your style. Luxury is definitely higher, though.

Is Laos cheap for tourists?

Ugh, Laos cheap? Oh man, lemme tell you 'bout Vang Vieng, back in October 2023. That river tubing!

Honestly, I expected it to bleed my wallet dry, all those backpacker legends, you know? Turns out? Not really. I stayed at this guest house; Riverside something... $5 a night. Unbelievable.

The food? Noodles, like, 1.50 USD. Chang Beer? Super cheap, of course.

It wasn't just the prices, though. It was the vibe.

  • Rent a scooter: Seriously cheap, like $8 a day. Exploring those caves...priceless.
  • Blue Lagoon visits: Mostly free, just the transport costs. And they were amazing.
  • Night market: Bargain hunter's dream.

My biggest expense? Probably the tuk-tuks. Always haggle! Seriously.

I’m not saying it's all paradise and pennies, but compared to, say, Thailand or even Vietnam, Laos felt incredibly affordable. I probably spent about $30 a day, everything included. Crazy, right? And man, I still remember that sunset over the Mekong in Luang Prabang. Wow!
