Da Nang vs. Saigon: Which Vietnamese City is More Affordable?

Da Nang’s definitely easier on the wallet than Saigon. I went to both last May.

Found decent rooms in Da Nang for like $15 a night near My Khe beach. Saigon, double that easy, even in District 3.

Street food, Banh Mi, everything felt cheaper in Da Nang. Lunch for two, maybe $5. Saigon, closer to $10 or $12, even at little local places.

Grab rides too. Da Nang, zooming around was peanuts. Saigon, adds up quick.

Saigon’s flashier, more stuff to do, but, oof, that price. Da Nang, chill, good value. Stayed a week in Da Nang, cost less than four days in Saigon.

Is Hanoi cheaper than HCMC?

Hanoi: marginally cheaper. Food costs less. Accommodation varies wildly. Transportation? Similar.

Your spending habits dictate the outcome. Not the city.

  • Hanoi street food: undeniably cheaper.
  • Hanoi hotel prices: fluctuate. Location matters greatly. My trip in 2023 proved this.
  • Transportation: negligible difference. Scooters reign supreme.

This isn’t a definitive answer. Life’s too complex for that. Expect surprises. Always.

Is Hanoi cheaper than HCMC?

Hanoi, yes, slightly cheaper. Not a gulf.

Food, street eats especially, favors Hanoi. Accommodation? Depends. Location. Style.

Transportation? A wash, really. How you travel decides all. Eh, that’s life.

  • Food: Hanoi edges out Saigon. Think pho versus, well, everything.
  • Accommodation: The Old Quarter tax in Hanoi is real. Saigon’s District 1? Similar sting.
  • Transport: Grab bikes reign supreme. Prices fluctuate. Rainy season? Surge. 2024 realities.
  • Lifestyle: My friend lost a bet. Had to eat balut every day for a week. Cost him, sure, but not much.

The rub: You get what you pay for. Or don’t.

It comes down to choices, doesn’t it? Luxury apartment in District 1? Or a dorm bunk in the Old Quarter. Hanoi’s charm is fading, quickly. My grandma would kill to see the current Vietnam.
