Is Grab in Ho Chi Minh City?

Totally! Grab’s everywhere in Ho Chi Minh City. Used it tons.

Seriously, last month, July 28th, I hopped in one near Ben Thanh Market. Cost me about 150,000 dong for a ride to District 1.

Grab’s available 24/7 in most big Vietnamese cities. Think Hanoi, Da Nang – the usual suspects.

But, smaller towns might have limited service, or even none. Check the app. It’ll tell you if it’s active in your area.

Basically, if you’re in a major city, you’re golden with Grab. Just download the app before you go!

How do you get around Ho Chi Minh City?

Buses. Cheap. Crowded.

Grab. Gojek. Be. Ubiquitous. Convenient.

Taxis. Exist. Fading.

Motorbikes. The city’s pulse. Dangerous. Exhilarating. My Honda Wave gets me through District 1 chaos.

Walking. Explore hidden alleys. Hot. Sweaty.

Metro. Line 1 operational. Ben Thanh to Suoi Tien. More lines coming… eventually.

  • Grab/Gojek/Be: Cars, motorbikes (xe ôm). Food delivery too. Essential apps.
  • Buses: Extensive routes. Learn the system. Saigon Bus app helpful.
  • Taxis: Vinasun, Mai Linh. Negotiate or meter.
  • Motorbikes: Rent or buy. Get a Vietnamese license. Traffic laws… flexible.
  • Walking: Best for short distances. Sidewalks… an adventure.
  • Metro: Limited but expanding. Air-conditioned respite.

Traffic is a beast. Patience is key. Accept the chaos. Embrace the horns. Find your rhythm. District 2 is calmer. My escape.

Why did Gojek leave Vietnam?

Night… again. Thinking about Gojek. Gone from Vietnam. September ’23. Just… gone. Remember using it in Hanoi. Convenient. Cheap.

  • Focused on bigger markets. Indonesia. Singapore.
  • Vietnam… tough competition. Grab. Been there longer. Stronger foothold.
  • Pandemic. Hit everyone hard. Especially businesses like Gojek. Tough decisions.
  • Merged with Tokopedia. Gojek and Tokopedia. Became GoTo. Restructured. Needed to streamline. Cut losses.

Remember those Gojek drivers. Green jackets everywhere. Sad to see them go. Tough on them. Lost their jobs. Whole economy shifted. Things change. Fast. Especially in tech. Ruthless. Just how it is. Makes you think. What’s next?
