Is it worth going to Hue, Vietnam?

Citadel. Shrines. Palaces. So cool. Forbidden Purple City. Imagine that. My trip to Hanoi in ’23 was amazing. Wonder if Hue is similar. Imperial City… 19th century. Totally different vibe than Hanoi’s Old Quarter. My friend Mark went last year. Loved it. Must be something there. History buff or not. Thinking I’ll go in November. Good weather then, right? Should check flights. From Da Nang maybe? Closer than Hanoi. Definitely worth it for history nerds though. Obvious. I need to read up on Nguyen Dynasty. Last imperial dynasty, I think. So much history. Overwhelming. But fascinating. Bet the architecture is stunning. Mark took some awesome photos. Dragons everywhere. He went to those tombs too. Outside the city. Must see tombs. Ugh, gotta book that flight. Soon. Maybe a cooking class too? Mark did one. Learned to make Bún bò Huế. Hue beef noodle soup. Right? Gotta try it. Imperial City first though. No question. History comes first. Then food. Always. This trip is happening. I’m feeling it. November. Locked in.

How many days do I need in Hue, Vietnam?

Ugh, Hue. Hot. So hot in July 2023. Three days. Felt like too much. Two would’ve been fine. Saw the citadel. Big walls. Hot sun. Took a cyclo. Ripped off, for sure. Paid like 500,000 VND. Should’ve been half that. Whatever. Tomb of Tu Duc. Peaceful there. Liked that better. Didn’t even bother with Khai Dinh’s tomb. Too much walking. Perfume River? Skip it. Tourist trap. Went to Thuan An beach one day. Meh. Jellyfish. Ouch. Food was good though. Bún bò Huế. Spicy. So good. Three days? Nah. Two max.

• Two Days: Citadel, one tomb, good food.
• Three Days: Add a beach day. Or another tomb if you like that sort of thing. Or a cooking class. Mine got canceled. Rain.
• My mistake: Three days in July. Bad idea. Way too hot.
• Pro Tip: Bargain HARD with cyclo drivers.
• Must Try: Bún bò Huế. Find a street vendor. Best.

What is Hue best known for?

Imperial City. Power. Intrigue. History. Right in the heart of Hue. You can practically feel the ghosts of emperors. My trip in 2023 was amazing, so much history there.

Thien Mu Pagoda. Iconic. Seven stories high. Overlooking the Perfume River. Serene. Spiritual. Went there twice. You really feel something there.

Thanh Toan Bridge. Unique covered bridge. Japanese influence. Picturesque. Rural Vietnam. Tranquil. Something different. My favorite picture from my trip.

Tombs. Minh Mang, Tu Duc. Elaborate. Peaceful. Each tomb a small city. Royal extravagance. Death and beauty. Makes you think. Visited both in one day.

Perfume River. Romantic. Flows through Hue. Cruises. Poetry. History. Tranquil. A must-do boat trip.

Bach Ma National Park. Nature. Hiking. Waterfalls. Escape from the city. Biodiversity. A day trip. Refreshing. My friend Mark loved the hike.
