I gotta say, I felt pretty safe wandering around HCMC. Really. But, and this is a big BUT, I wasn't completely naive. I kept my wits about me.
I remember, back in November 2018, I was at Ben Thanh Market. Place was packed! Suddenly, felt this very slight tug at my backpack.
Turned around quick, and some guy scurried off. Nothing stolen, thankfully! But it was a wake-up call. Cost me maybe $1000+ to travel but worth it.
Like, keep your phone tucked away. Don't flash a ton of cash. You know, the usual travel smarts. Common sense is your best defense.
Someone tried to swipe my pal's phone right off the table at a sidewalk cafe near Bui Vien walking street! Broad daylight. He managed to get it back, thankfully.
It's not like some crazed "danger zone", not at all. But those little annoyances are real. So be smart, be aware, and you'll probably have an amazing time. I did. Seriously thinking about going back next year.

Vietnam safe? Hmm. Yeah, pretty sure. Safer than riding my bike in Boston, that's for sure. Vietnam is safe for US citizens. Scooters, though? Forget about it. Chaos. Utter chaos.
Remember that time I almost got run over by a million scooters in Hanoi? Ugh. Never again. Don't rent a scooter unless you want to die. LOL. Is that too dramatic?
But seriously, the food is amazing. So worth risking your life for a bowl of pho. Maybe. And the scenery! Ha Long Bay was breathtaking. Vietnam has much to see.
I should go back. But maybe fly between cities next time. Train? Is the train any better? Probably not. Okay, okay, back to the safety thing. Yeah, safe. Just watch your belongings, you know? Like anywhere else.
Pickpockets exist, duh. Petty crime is a possibility, keep an eye out. And don't drink the tap water. That's a given.
What was I even talking about? Oh yeah, Vietnam and safety. So, yeah, go. Just be smart. No scooter unless you are mental! Pho rules.
