Is it good to use Uber in Japan?

Uber in Japan is available only in Tokyo, offering limited coverage. While convenient for cashless payment and potentially finding English-speaking drivers, its main advantage over taxis is no late-night surcharge. Its usefulness is restricted by its very limited service area.

So, is Uber any good in Japan? Honestly, it's a bit of a mixed bag, you know? I tried it once in Tokyo – remember that crazy night we were trying to get back to the hotel after karaoke? Total chaos! Anyway, it was handy, no arguing with the fare or fumbling for yen at 2 am. That's a big plus, definitely. Cash is king in Japan, often a pain even during the day! And yeah, the driver spoke some English, which was a lifesaver considering my rusty Japanese.

But the thing is, Uber in Japan is only in Tokyo. Seriously, only Tokyo. Think about that – if you're exploring Kyoto, Osaka, or anywhere else outside the capital, you're out of luck. That pretty much limits its usefulness, right? I mean, what good is a convenient ride-hailing app if it only works in one city? It’s like having a super-powered Swiss Army knife that only opens bottle caps. Kind of defeats the purpose.

So, is it good? For Tokyo, maybe, especially if you're not comfortable hailing taxis late at night. Avoiding those late-night charges is a win in my book, those can be brutal! But for the rest of Japan? Not so much. You'll be sticking to trains and taxis, I'm afraid. I’d probably still opt for a regular taxi most of the time unless I’m desperate. They're everywhere, after all. Just be prepared to pay a little extra at night. Just a thought!
