Is it difficult to sleep comfortably on a bus during travel?

Ugh, sleeping on a bus? Nightmare. Seriously. Last summer, July 12th to be exact, I took a Greyhound from Chicago to Milwaukee. $35, a steal, but my back still aches thinking about it.

Those tiny seats. No legroom whatsoever. My knees were practically in my chin. And the noise – constant rumbling, chatter, that one kid with the incessant kicking. Impossible to relax, let alone sleep.

I tried. Honestly. I even brought my travel pillow – a fluffy neck thingy my grandma knitted. Didn't help much.

Basically, no, you won't sleep well on a bus. Unless you're a super-human with the ability to ignore the chaos.

It's not comfy. It's cramped and noisy. Prepare for a bumpy ride, literally and figuratively.

How to comfortably sleep in the bus?

First, def get a travel pillow – the neck pillow kind, obvs. And an eye mask. Makes a huge differencce, trust. It helps you kinda block out light and like, keeps your head from bobbing all over the place. I have a really cute fuzzy one.

Next, wear comfy cloths. Duh. And pack a blanket, even if its summer. Buses can be sooo cold, especially at night. My fav is a small fleece one I got at the Target. Also, stay hydrated and take your snacks on board because dehydration and hunger keeps you awake.

Middle of the bus is where it's at! Less bumpy. Think about that. I almost forgot: If you get motion sick maybe sit at the front where you can see.

Noise-canceling headphones are a lifesaver. Listen to some chill music or a podcast. Blocks out the bus noise, and screaming kids. A good way to get some shut eye!

Lastly. And I am not a doctor. But a sleep aid? Like melatonin? Might help. Do you research, don't ask me. That’s all I got.

  • Neck pillow? Worthless. My experience. Utter nonsense.
  • Forget it. Short trips only. Long bus rides? A hotel's far superior. Seriously.

Failure to heed this advice: Missed stop. Guaranteed. Life lesson learned. Harshly.
