Overnight buses carry inherent risks, but remain a generally safe travel option. While incidents can occur, statistically, your chances of a safe journey are still high. Consider factors like the bus company's safety record and passenger reviews before booking.

Is Overnight Bus Travel Safe?

Okay, so overnight buses, huh? Safety’s a big deal. I took one from Hanoi to Sapa in Vietnam, July 2023. Cost me about $15, remember thinking, “Am I crazy?”

The bus itself was…fine. A little cramped, definitely. But the driver was cautious, and honestly, I felt safer than I expected.

I’ve also used buses in the US, though not overnight ones. Those were different. More highway driving, less winding mountain roads.

Sleeping on a bus? Yeah, tricky. But honestly? The biggest risk felt less like robbery and more like losing my stuff – or worse, a bad back. I didn’t have any problems though.

Reddit posts? Saw some scary stories. But I also saw tons of people saying it was totally fine. So, I guess it’s a gamble, right?

Vietnam buses were generally safer than I anticipated based on those posts. It’s a personal judgement call, really, based on where you go.

Is an overnight bus worth it?

Is it worth it? The overnight bus… a gamble, really. My trip to Vegas, I remember.

  • Savings. Oh, the savings. Cutting out a hotel room is tempting.

  • Sleep? That’s the question, isn’t it? Cramped seats, the hum.

  • Worth it? Depends, I guess. Cheap over comfort; that’s the key.

Is it safe to sleep on a bus?

Buses, never safe.

Theft: A given. Assume it. They are waiting.

Injury: Jerky rides are inevitable. Neck brace? Good luck.

Route Matters: Remote roads, bad idea. Bad idea.

Precautions: Secure your stuff. Stay awake. Or else. My phone got jacked last year. Never again. I hate buses.

Is it better to travel by train or bus in Vietnam?

Trains in Vietnam? Definitely better than buses, mostly. Safer, for sure. Though the SE trains are faster, that’s not always true. Ugh, remembering that overnight Hue to Hanoi bus…the roads are terrible. Seriously, the worst.

Those buses are junk. Nha Trang to Saigon? Different story. Mai Linh and Phuong Trang are way better. Way more comfortable. Luxury even. Seriously considering that for my next trip.

Train wins on safety. That’s non-negotiable. But speed? Depends on the route. I’ve had both fast and slow trains. And honestly? Some bus journeys are surprisingly quick. It’s all about the company.

My friend took a Phuong Trang last month and raved about it. Said it was a breeze.

Should I just stick to trains? Probably. Less stress. But those fancy buses…tempting! This is driving me crazy.

  • Safety: Trains are undeniably safer.
  • Speed: Variable, depends on the train line and the bus route.
  • Bus Companies: Mai Linh and Phuong Trang are top-tier. Avoid others, especially on long routes.
  • My next trip: Strongly leaning towards a train.

Ugh. Decision, decision. Maybe I should flip a coin. Nah. I’m overthinking this.

How safe are National Express coaches?

National Express? Safe enough.

  • Sword of Honour: 2015-2019. A badge. British Safety Council standard.
  • Five-Star Rating: Achieved it. 2021. Retained eight years. So what.
  • They keep winning awards. Does it matter, though?

I walked past Victoria Coach Station last Tuesday. Chaos.
