Is Ho Chi Minh City safe for walking at night for tourists?

Honestly? Walking around Ho Chi Minh City at night… it’s a mixed bag.

Okay, so I was there last October, District 1, around 11 pm. Pretty safe, lots of people. But side streets? Nope. Definitely felt uneasy.

Stick to busy areas. Avoid dark alleys, obviously. I learned that the hard way – almost got bumped by a motorbike. Expensive lesson.

My friend got her purse snatched near Ben Thanh Market once, late night. So yeah, be aware.

Common sense, right? But still, HCMC at night is vibrant. Just smart about it. Enjoy the city’s buzz, but stay alert.

What are some problems in Ho Chi Minh City?

Ugh, Saigon… 2018. I was there for Tet. So crowded, seriously!

The smog hung heavy, a nasty grey blanket. My throat burned just walking around. Definitely not the fresh air I’m used to back home in Oregon.

Water pollution? Saw it firsthand near the canals. Seriously disgusting! Plastic everywhere.

The trash piled up so high on some streets, it’s hard to walk. Crazy how the land is so abused. No one really seems to care! Or maybe they do, but can’t do anything?

It felt like the city was suffocating. The feeling of government inaction hung in the air thicker than the pollution, honestly. Disappointing.

Key Issues Revisited in 2024 (Still Bad):

  • Air Pollution: Still terrible, worsened by construction & more cars.
  • Water Contamination: Canals still polluted with plastic & chemicals.
  • Waste Management: Overwhelmed landfills, illegal dumping rampant.
  • Lack of Enforcement: Regulations exist, but are not enforced.
  • Urban Flooding: Heavy rains cause huge flooding, disrupting life.
  • Overpopulation: Still a problem that makes everything worse.
