Three to four days? Bah! For Ninh Binh? That's tourist-brochure-speak. You need at least two full days, maybe three if you're, I don't know, a snail. My trip last year – a whirlwind, I tell ya – even that needed a solid 48 hours. Less feels criminal.

Two days: Hit the biggies. Trang An, Tam Coc – the iconic boat rides. That's practically a given. Unless you prefer staring at hotel walls.
Three days: Adds exploring the Perfume Pagoda (if you're not averse to a slightly touristy vibe). Bich Dong Pagoda is another cool option; I preferred its charming simplicity over the Perfume Pagoda's hyped-up energy. I am a snob like that.
Four+ days: Are you really that dedicated? You're probably already planning biking trips around the rice paddies. Honestly, you'll need a map the size of a small country to navigate those paths.
My personal recommendation? Two days for the must-sees, a third if you've got the energy (and aren't afraid of crowds – there will be crowds), or four if you’re into extended meditation sessions amongst ancient pagodas. Four days could easily be spent wandering those rice paddies, getting deliciously lost.
Don't rush things. Ninh Binh's not a race, it's a mood. A beautiful, slightly humid, exceptionally picturesque mood. Plus, you'll want time for pho. Always time for pho. My favorite noodle joint is near the bus station – try the spicy beef. You won't regret it. Trust me on this one.
