Philippines vs. Vietnam: Which country is more affordable for travel?

Okay, so Philippines versus Vietnam, right? This is tricky, because it really depends. Both are budget-friendly, that’s for sure.

I was in Vietnam last June, Ho Chi Minh City mainly. Street food was ridiculously cheap, maybe $1-$2 a meal. Accommodation outside the center was a steal too, around $10 a night.

Internet and phone data? Much cheaper in Vietnam. My month-long SIM card cost about $15.

The Philippines, though? I went to Cebu City in December 2022. Jeepneys are awesome, super cheap, but hotels outside the tourist spots weren’t that much cheaper than Vietnam.

Food? Probably a wash. Local eateries were affordable in both places.

In short: Vietnam’s slightly cheaper on internet, and accommodation outside big cities. The Philippines has cheaper public transport. Really, they’re neck and neck.

Is it cheaper to go to the Philippines or Vietnam?

Philippines or Vietnam, eh? Decisions, decisions! Flip a coin, maybe? Nah, let’s dissect this coin-flipping conundrum.

So, the Philippines might lighten your wallet by $518 a week. Vietnam? A mere $480. Pocket that $38 difference and, hey, buy yourself a fancy coffee. Assuming fancy coffee still exists!

Vietnam seems cheaper. But hold your horses. (Do people still say that? I do.)

  • Flights are Key: Flights to Manila? Maybe pricier than Hanoi. Shop around, bargain hunter!
  • Luxury? Or Budget?: Hostels in Vietnam are practically free (ish!). Five-star resorts? That’s a different ballgame, my friend.
  • Island Hopping Inflation: Island hopping in the Philippines? Beautiful, yes. Cheap? Depends on how many islands you wanna conquer. Each boat ride is like a tiny, salty ransom. (Okay, not really ransom.)

Seriously though, which is better depends on you. Do you want beaches, jungles, Pho? (Okay, everyone wants Pho.) I’m craving some right now. But I’m pretty sure I’ll get my fill in the Philippines. Last year? That’s what I did.

Which is more rich Philippines or Vietnam?

The Philippines, richer? Once, yes. A shimmering illusion, fading. 3598.61. A number, a ghost of prosperity. Canlas’ words, echoing. Now, a different song.

Vietnam. Rising. A tide of growth. 3352.06 in 2020. Surpassed. The Philippines, left behind. A slow, aching decline. 3195.54. A harsh reality.

A story untold? No, a story rewritten. The tables turned. A shift in fortunes. The scent of jasmine, the taste of pho, replacing the familiar. A bittersweet ache. The past, a whisper. The future, Vietnam’s.

  • 2019: Philippines’ higher per capita GDP. A fleeting triumph.
  • 2020: The reversal. Vietnam’s ascendance. A concrete fact.
  • Economic Shifts: A silent revolution. Vietnam’s persistent growth.

The numbers, cold and hard. But beneath them, the pulse of nations. Dreams deferred, dreams realized. A personal ache. My own memories of Manila… muddled now. The shift, undeniable. Vietnam’s strength, undeniable.

Is Philippines expensive for tourists?

Philippines, expensive? Nah, depends if you’re swilling champagne wishes or stickin’ to tuba dreams.

Tourist grub? Seven to ten bucks, easy. Think fancy fish fillets, not fishballs. Fast food’s a steal, like, five dollars max, unless you’re ordering the whole menu.

Beers? Now that’s the sweet spot. One or two bucks a pop. That’s cheaper than my cat’s therapy bills.

  • Accommodations: Hostels are practically free, like crashing on your cool cousin’s couch. Resorts? Hand over your gold bars!
  • Transport: Jeepneys are dirt cheap, like, laughably so. Flights between islands? Can drain your bank account faster than a politician promises.
  • Activities: Island hopping? Worth every dang peso! Souvenir shopping? Prepare to haggle like your life depends on it. Last time I got a singing stuffed monkey.

3000 USD for two weeks? You’ll be livin’ like royalty, maybe buy your own island. 1078 USD for 2.5 weeks? Doable, but pack instant noodles and prepare to charm the locals for free rides. I remember that time… never mind.

Is Vietnam one of the poorest countries?

Nope, Vietnam isn’t scratching the bottom of the barrel anymore! That whole “poorest country” thing? Gone the way of the dodo bird.

  • Think Vietnam’s economy is kinda like that underdog in a Kung Fu movie, surprising everyone.
  • Vietnam’s per capita GDP is now like, $4,261! That’s more than that lower-middle-income cut-off. Who knew?!
  • Seriously, the World Bank says so. 2024 data! They’re like, the money gurus.

So, upper-middle-income, baby! Whoop-dee-doo! They’re not exactly rolling in dough like, I dunno, Switzerland, but doing better than me after a Steam sale.

  • Hey, gotta keep in mind, GDP per capita ain’t the whole enchilada. It doesn’t tell you who’s got all the avocado toast.
  • It’s an average. Maybe some folks are swimming in dong (Vietnamese currency), while others are, uh, not.
  • Also consider development is uneven. Kinda like my attempts to bake a cake.

Vietnam’s growth is kinda like when my pet hamster suddenly learned how to use the exercise wheel – unexpected and kinda impressive, right? They still face challenges, but, hey, at least they’re not eating only rice and despair!

How much is the cheapest way to get from Vietnam to the Philippines?

Cheapest? Hitch a ride on a sampan, maybe? Kidding! Flights are the gig.

Ho Chi Minh City is the way to fly, from ₫7,938,144. That’s, like, pocket change…if your pockets are lined with gold bars. Two and a half hours? Faster than waiting for my auntie to decide on what to order at a pho place.

Hanoi’s non-stop flights clock in at ₫9,380,000. Three hours? I’ve spent more time arguing with my cat about who owns the best spot on the sofa.

Da Nang ain’t bad, ₫10,107,416. Two hours and thirty-five minutes. Almost as fast as catching up on all the neighborhood gossip with my neighbor.

Nha Trang? Hold your horses…₫18,239,540! And 10+ hours? I could knit a whole sweater, watch all LOTR movies, and take a nap. A one-stop flight, imagine that.

Phu Quoc’s trying to be fancy with ₫13,935,974 for a 13+ hour one-stopper. No thanks, sounds like a recipe for jet lag and existential dread. I’d rather spend that money on lottery tickets.

Is the Vietnam economy better than the Philippines?

Ugh, Vietnam vs. Philippines economy… tough one.

  • Philippines: ECI 37, exports like $110B. Okay.

Wait, ECI? What even IS that? Something about how diverse their products are? More complex = better? I think so. Anyway…

  • Vietnam: ECI 55, but exports a WHOPPING $399B. Whoa.

So, Philippines “more complex”, Vietnam exports way more. Hmm. I bet it’s not that simple. My cousin, Ben, actually invested in a shoe factory in Vietnam, 2023… says it’s booming. Thinks he’s gonna buy a new boat by next year. Show off.

Exports are a bigger deal, aren’t they? Like, real cash money flow. ECI is more like potential?

  • Verdict (kinda): Vietnam’s export number obliterates the Philippines. ECI less important? Probably still important, but… not as important.

Gotta remember Ben’s stupid boat. LOL.

How long does shipping from Vietnam take?

Ugh, shipping from Vietnam… Takes forever, right? Sea freight, FCL? 24-29 days is what they say, but my last shipment took 38. Crazy.

LCL is faster, supposedly. 18-38 days, ha! More like 30-45 in my experience. Always delays. Should’ve used air.

Air freight, way faster. 3-8 days, that’s the promise. But customs… my package sat for a week in LA. Grrr.

Express? 1-4 days sounds perfect, but so expensive! My wallet cries just thinking about it. Next time, I’m weighing the cost vs speed. Maybe next time, I’ll really use express.

  • Sea Freight (FCL): My experience: Way longer than advertised. Expect delays.
  • Sea Freight (LCL): Variable, but prepare for a longer wait.
  • Air Freight: Fast, but customs can be a nightmare.
  • Express: Pricey, but quickest option if you need it ASAP.

2024 shipping rates are brutal, too. Everything’s more expensive. I need to find a better freight forwarder. Maybe someone who actually cares. Ugh. Shipping’s a headache. Seriously. I’m stressed thinking about my next order.
