Is public transport in Vietnam expensive?

Okay, so expensive public transport in Vietnam? Hmm…

Nah, not really. It’s definitely cheaper than back home, that’s for sure. I remember being properly shocked the first time I hopped on a bus in Hanoi. Like, five thousand dong (roughly $0.20 USD) for a ride? WHAT? Buses are cheap.

Motorbike taxis, though…those xe oms? Kinda depends.

You gotta haggle, seriously. Or just use Grab. I got totally ripped off once, thinking I knew better, haha. Cost me like 50k VND (2 dollars) for a ride that should’ve been 20k. Rookie mistake. But even that wasn’t bank-breaking.

Trains are a good option for longer trips, especially if you want to avoid the chaotic traffic. I think I paid around 300,000 VND ($12 USD) from Da Nang to Nha Trang a few years ago (August 2019). So comfy. Price moderate, but it really worth.

Vietnam’s public transport isn’t gonna bleed you dry.

For short distances, buses are usually just a few thousand VND.

Motorbike taxis & ride-hailing apps like Grab provide moderately priced transport. Negotiate rates beforehand for xe om.

Trains cost moderately for long journey.
