Is Shanghai Airport Big? A Look at the Sprawling Pudong International

When asking "Is Shanghai Airport big?", the answer is a resounding yes, especially if you're talking about Pudong International (PVG). While Shanghai technically has two major airports, Pudong often dominates the conversation, and for good reason. This aviation behemoth sprawls across a staggering 40 square kilometers on the eastern coast of Pudong. To put that into perspective, that's larger than many small cities, and roughly equivalent to 7,400 football fields.

This vast expanse, located approximately 30 kilometers from Shanghai's city center, is more than just a collection of runways and terminals. It's a testament to Shanghai's position as a global powerhouse and a vital link in the world's air travel network. The sheer size of Pudong allows it to accommodate the immense passenger volume that flows through the city, connecting Shanghai to destinations across the globe.

But the size isn't just about surface area. Pudong's two main passenger terminals, along with the satellite terminal, are architectural marvels in themselves. Navigating these vast structures can feel like exploring a small city, with extensive shopping areas, diverse dining options, and even tranquil gardens offering respite from the hustle and bustle of air travel.

The scale of Pudong also reflects the airport's ambition for the future. With plans for further expansion already in motion, including new terminals and runways, Pudong is poised to solidify its position as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs.

So, while Shanghai does have another airport, Hongqiao, which serves primarily domestic and regional flights, when discussing the size and scope of "Shanghai Airport," Pudong International often takes center stage. Its massive footprint, impressive infrastructure, and continuous growth leave no doubt: Pudong is big, and it plays a crucial role in connecting Shanghai, and indeed China, to the rest of the world.
