Can I use my Eurail Pass in Portugal?

No. A Eurail Pass itself doesn't work in Portugal. That's what I learned. It sucks. Really bummed me out when I found that out. I was planning a whole trip... Spent ages researching.

You need a separate Portugal rail pass. The Eurail Global Pass doesn't include it. Learned that the hard way. Damn.

• Eurail is for other countries. France, Germany, Italy… all those places. Portugal is not included in the main passes.
• Check the small print. Always. Seriously. Always read the damn terms and conditions. I didn't. Big mistake.
• It's a pain in the ass. Planning trips is hard enough.

I feel like an idiot. My 2024 trip is ruined. Or at least that part is. I’m going to have to re-book everything. Ugh. This is a mess.

Okay, so like, does Eurail cover Spain? Yes it does! It's basically your unlimited train ticket all over Spain, so you don't have to stress, you know, buying tickets everytime.

Yeah, no more standing in lines, like, who wants to do that?

Spain is part of the Eurail zone, so totally yes. It's just easier than like, buying point to point tickets. I went in summer 2023, and it was a total game changer!

No. High-speed rail absent. Slow trains exist. Inefficient. My 2024 trip proved this. A waste of time. Consider flying. Faster, arguably better.

• Air travel: superior alternative. My experience: Lisbon to Madrid. Three hours. Train: eight. Ridiculous.

The railway system between Spain and Portugal remains underdeveloped. A political issue perhaps? Or simple inertia. I find it frustrating. My personal time is valuable. This affects tourism, obviously. A missed opportunity.

Ugh, Portugal train passes. So confusing! Eurail? Interrail? What's the diff anyway? My friend went last year, swore by the Interrail Portugal Pass. Said it was totally worth it.

But was it really? He's a spender, always buys the fanciest stuff. Maybe he'd have been fine with a cheaper option. I need something flexible. A trip to Sintra is a must. Absolutely stunning, the Pena Palace!

Best for me? Probably the Interrail Portugal Pass, unless you only plan on seeing Lisbon and Porto. Even then, maybe not. You can use it for days, not just weeks. Good for spontaneous people like me.

Thinking of Porto now... amazing port wine cellars. I should book a tasting. And Faro. The beaches are supposed to be gorgeous. Definitely need those beach days.
