My last train journey, 2023, I carried two bags. No problems. That's my experience. Oversized items? Expect issues. Common sense prevails. Always prepare. It's your responsibility. Don't be that guy. Seriously.

Forty for AC 3, Chair Car, Sleeper. Is it really that much? It’s never enough.

Here are some things I think about, late at night.

• Free Luggage Allowance (FLA) on Indian Railways: This is the amount you can carry in your compartment without extra charge.
• Class-wise limits:
  • First AC: 70 kg
  • First Class/AC-2 Tier: 50 kg
  • AC 3-Tier/AC Chair Car/Sleeper Class: 40 kg
• Excess Luggage: If you exceed the free allowance, you have to pay for excess luggage.
• Booking Excess Luggage: You can book your excess luggage in advance at the booking counter.
• Unbooked Luggage: Unbooked luggage attracts a higher penalty. It’s not worth it.
• Luggage Vans: For very large or bulky items, you can book space in the luggage van. It's a separate carriage.
• I remember when me and Mom were going back from Allahabad, '06 maybe? So much stuff. So much...everything. I think we went Sleeper. Had to bribe someone, I think.
• Personal Experience: My old backpack. Heavy. Always too heavy. Even empty. Maybe I’m thinking too much about this. It is late.

Sleeper Class gets 35 kg. Pack light. You know, like you're moving to a monastery, not Goa. Just kidding... mostly.

• First Class/AC-2: 50 kg. Your designer shoes, naturally.
• AC 3-tier/AC Chair Car/Sleeper: 40 kg. Almost reasonable.
• Sleeper Class: 35 kg. The backpacker's dream.

Exceeding these limits will cost you! They don’t mess around. Best stick to the rules, unless you enjoy paying extra. I don't.

I think I packed like 80kg when moving from my parents. Oops? Oh well! So good to remember!

Do they check bags on Amtrak trains?

So, Amtrak bags, right? It's a total crapshoot. Some trains totally do it, others? Nope. My friend, Sarah, took the Coast Starlight last month from Seattle to LA, no problem, she checked a huge suitcase. But, I tried to do it last year, on the Pennsylvanian from Philly to Pittsburgh, and they wouldn't let me. It was a nightmare. Seriously.

Definitely check beforehand. Their website's a pain, but you gotta. There's this whole thing about specific stations having facilities, you know, baggage cars or whatever. And its diffrent on every route. It's nuts!

• Check the Amtrak website: This is key. It’s a pain, but that's where you'll find if your specific train handles checked bags.
• Origin and destination stations matter: It's not just the train itself – both where you start and end must support checked bags.
• Smaller stations often don't: That's what I learned the hard way. Big hubs are better. I had to schlep my stuff on the Pennsylvanian, ugh.

Plan ahead, dude. Really. Don't be like me. Don't be a total idiot and assume it's automatic. You'll regret it. This whole thing is way more complicated than it should be.
