Is there free internet on VIA Rail?

So yeah, VIA Rail, right? They got free wifi, most trains anyway. It’s pretty decent, actually. Not blazing fast, but good enough to check emails, browse stuff. My friend, Sarah, uses it all the time on the Toronto-Montreal route.

And get this, it’s not just on the trains themselves! They have it in their business lounges too, which is sweet if you’re travelling first class or something. Plus, some stations have it, I’ve seen it at Union Station in Toronto, for sure, a couple others as well.

Connecting is easy peasy, you just find their network name, click it, accept the terms, and boom! You’re online. Simple as that! Really helped me out last time I was traveling. Though, I did have issues once in a smaller station– they were doing some updates, I think. Annoying.

Here’s the lowdown:

Okay, so ICE trains… phone chargers.

• ICE, yeah, those fancy German trains. Europe’s best? Well, maybe. Power sockets… yes! At every seat? I think so, or mostly.

• Restaurants too…right? Yes. Wait, sockets…phone chargers, same thing, doh!

Power sockets exist. My sister took the ICE last month to Hamburg.

• WiFi. Free WiFi, yessss! It’s 2024; I demand free WiFi. What year is it anyway? Am I getting old? Ugh.

• High-spec interior. Comfy seats too. Remember that awful train from Berlin to Prague in 2018? Never again!

ICE trains are pretty good. Okay, I think that’s it.

• The restaurant car is good for snacks and drinks. Coffee is a must.
• WiFi speeds vary; don’t expect to stream Netflix. I’d rather read a book.
• Bring noise-canceling headphones to block out chatty people. Ah bliss.

ICE 1 trains? Ah, a classic. Fundamentally, they feature two powerheads. Think locomotives but sleeker. And then the intermediate cars, somewhere between 9 and 14 originally.

Operationally? You can view the train as a multiple unit. The sets stay together, see? Almost symbiotic, like two minds in sync. It’s more than just carriages.

A past refresh? Yep. Concluded around 2008. They standardized to 12 cars. Bet logistics folk were pleased! I wonder what color they are…

• Just watched the scenery mostly. Rhine.

Is it really a treat? Depends. I just wanted to be somewhere else, really.

Does SBB train have free WiFi?

Ugh, Swiss trains. Wifi, right? SBB FreeSurf app. Got it. Works on long-distance trains. IC and IR, those letters always mess me up. Are they like, first class and second class or something? I need to look that up later.

So, free wifi, cool. But it’s dependent on phone coverage, that’s a bummer. What if the coverage sucks? My phone barely works in my apartment sometimes! Annoying. Will it actually be fast enough to stream a movie? Probably not. That’s a huge disappointment.

This app, FreeSurf… is it actually free? Are there hidden charges? Always suspicious. Maybe I should read the fine print. Lazy. I’ll do it tomorrow.

I swear, the signal strength depends on what part of the country you are going thru, especially in the more rural areas. Last year, going to Quebec City, forget about it! It was almost unusable, horrible, but hey, free is free, right? This year, 2024, traveling on the corridor route was much better. Much better! Seriously, like night and day. Think about it.

Air conditioning, duh. It’s standard. Can’t imagine being on a train without it.

Free wifi too, if it works. First and Standard. Can’t say it’s always reliable, tbh.

I remember that time going to Berlin, wifi was out the whole way. A nightmare. Almost as bad as that time my charger didn’t work at all, I was dead. What a pain.

Man, that Amtrak trip from Chicago to New Orleans in 2023 was something else. The cafe car, right? It was cramped. Seriously, felt like sardines. Long lines, too. I remember this one woman, practically pushing her way through. Rude.

I wanted a decent sandwich, but they were all, like, pre-packaged. Disappointing. I ended up getting a sad, little cheese quesadilla. It was okay, I guess, but not what I craved after hours on that train.

The coffee was strong, though. That was a plus. Needed it. The whole experience was… underwhelming.

• Limited menu: The choices were surprisingly poor. Nothing exciting.
• Overpriced: The quesadilla cost a fortune. I’m certain I overpaid.
• Crowded cafe car: It was a nightmare. Standing room only most of the time. So annoying.
• Long lines: Expect long waits. Be prepared to be patient – or hungry.
• Okay coffee: The coffee was decent, at least. That’s a definite plus. Seriously, that’s all I remember that was positive.

The whole thing just felt… rushed. Like they were more focused on moving people than providing a good experience. Seriously, the entire cafe system needs an upgrade. I’m still annoyed about that overpriced quesadilla.
