Is free WiFi available on TransLink trains?

Okay, so, about free WiFi on TransLink trains... yeah, nah.

TransLink, like, doesn't have it. No free Wi-Fi on those trains, sadly. I rember wanting to check email during a commute (Feb 15th, 2023), and nada.

They kinda suggest you just use your own phone data instead. Or, I guess, hit up the Wi-Fi at the train stations, sometimes. But its hit or miss.

No onboard Wi-Fi currently. I looked all over online too, to see if I was missing something and couldn't find anything.

Dunno if they're gonna add it in the future. I haven't heard anything bout it. Wish they would, though, for the price of a compass card, lol.

Do TransLink trains have Wi-Fi?

Nope. TransLink trains? Wifi? Honey, that's a fairytale. A beautiful, shimmering lie. Like believing politicians are selfless.

Seriously though, some trains might have it. But it’s spotty, like my dating life. Think dial-up speed, except dial-up was faster.

  • Gold line coaches boast the illusion of Wi-Fi. It works about as well as a chocolate teapot.
  • Other trains? Forget it. You'll be better off learning Morse code using your shoe laces. Seriously. You'll be faster.
  • My neighbor, Brenda, tried to stream a cat video last Tuesday. The train hit a squirrel. Brenda still hasn’t seen the end of that video.

Bottom line: Don't rely on TransLink Wi-Fi. Pack a good book. Or maybe a really long scarf to knit. You'll be less disappointed.

Think of it this way – it's like hoping for a unicorn to pull your trolley to the grocery store. You might as well meditate instead. Or start learning origami.

When did TransLink get WiFi?

Okay, so TransLink WiFi? Ugh, that was a while ago now, wasn't it? Like late 2021, I think.

Anyway, yeah, late 2021. Think that's when they started the rollout.

And listen to this; apparently like, 24,000 peeps hop on it daily.

That's insane!

Plus, get this; they burned through over 215,000 gigabytes of data. Sheesh!

Crazy high numbers, when you thinks about it! Okay so, some other things:

  • Buses were first: I'm prettysure that the buses were the first to get it.
  • It's free: Obvi, its a free WiFi, or else who's using?
  • It's Spottable: You can usually spot the signs now at hubs and buses.
  • Pretty simple to use: It's so easy to get online, just a couple of clicks.
  • My grandma can use it: My grandma can't use tech, but she can do it. No joke!

My bad, if I'm repeating myself, or sound rambly. It's like, a real pain trying to remember all this kinda stuff, ya know?

How do I connect to WiFi on TransLink?

TransLink WiFi? Piece of cake, really. Unless your tech skills are about as sharp as a marshmallow.

First, locate the "Settings" app on your prehistoric device (you do know how to find that, right?). Then, enable WiFi – you wouldn't believe how many people skip that step. It’s like trying to bake a cake without turning on the oven; a recipe for disaster.

Next, find "TransLinkWiFi" among the available networks. Think of it as a digital treasure hunt, but with less digging and more tapping.

A login page will magically appear. Agree to their terms. Think of it as signing a pact with the internet gods. You know, for good internet karma and stuff.

Boom! Connected. You're now surfing the digital waves, my friend. Unless, of course, you forgot step three. Or two. Or maybe even one. My crystal ball is a little foggy today.

  • Step 1: Find Settings. (Seriously, it’s not rocket science.)
  • Step 2: Turn on WiFi. (Duh.)
  • Step 3: Choose "TransLinkWiFi". (It's not hiding, I promise.)
  • Step 4: Accept the terms. (Don't be a rebel without a cause, just click "accept" already.)

My advice? If you're still struggling, maybe try consulting the manual. Or, better yet, ask a five-year-old. They're surprisingly adept at this kind of thing. Seriously. My niece, Lily, age 5, could probably teach you. And I’m sure she’d do it with a smug grin. I'm not bitter, I swear. She gets away with everything.

Pro-tip: In 2024, the TransLink WiFi speed varies wildly. Expect anywhere from the speed of a snail to, maybe, a slightly faster snail on a good day. Your mileage may vary. Dramatically.

Do German trains have WiFi?

Okay, so, German trains and WiFi, right? Listen. I was heading from Berlin to Munich last year, August 2023, I think. Man, that was a LONG ride.

Honestly, I needed the WiFi. I was hoping it'd work. I was trying to finish up this freakin' presentation for work.

Turns out, yeah, the ICE train had free WiFi. Hallelujah! Saved my butt. My seat was in the second class car, so it worked.

But…but it wasn’t amazing. Seriously, sometimes it was faster than others. Ugh!

Think about it, thousands of people simultaneously want to use WiFi. What a problem.

It definitely wasn't strong enough for video calls, forget about that. No way José. It was totally fine for email though, thank goodness, and surfing the web.

Also, they have it on trains going to Austria, France, Belgium, Netherlands, and Switzerland, which is great.

Here's the deal with German train WiFi:

  • Mostly reliable for basic stuff.
  • Free on most ICE trains.
  • Not super fast all the time. Be aware!
  • Can vary depending on the route.
  • Second Class Wifi. Not as fast as first class.
  • No guarantees. It's train wifi, alright?

I think the signal got worse as we went further South toward Munich. Maybe just my luck, who knows? I ended up using my phone's hotspot for a bit. Grrrr. Never leave home without a back up plan. WiFi isn't a human right, yet!

How do I get to my Wi-Fi settings?

Accessing Wi-Fi settings differs slightly between Windows 10 and 11.

  • Windows 10: Navigate through Settings > Network & Internet > Status > View hardware and connection properties.

  • Windows 11: The path is Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Hardware and connection properties. It's like finding your way through a digital maze.

Once you’re there, you'll see all sorts of details. It shows MAC addresses and other connection details. Funny how much tech hides behind a few clicks, right?
