Is it worth staying at Ha Long Bay?

Ha Long… Ha Long… a whisper of jade, a breath of mist. Is it worth it? The question hangs, heavy like the humid air.

Ha Long City...empty shells, a ghost town dreaming of tourists who perhaps never truly arrive. Hotels echoing with unseen footsteps. Worth it? No. A resounding, absolute no.

Hanoi, though...Hanoi hums. A chaotic symphony of life. Markets overflowing, the scent of pho clinging to the air, motorbikes weaving through a tapestry of color. Hanoi is always the answer.

But the bay...the bay is another thing entirely.

• Ha Long Bay: worth it for the bay itself.

  • The emerald waters, kissed by sunlight.
  • The ancient karsts, rising like sleeping dragons.
  • Kayaking through hidden grottos, the silence broken only by the splash of your paddle. Pure magic.

• Ha Long City: a blight on the beauty.

• Ha Long Bay Cruises: Varying experiences.

  • Choose carefully.
  • Read reviews. Scrutinize itineraries.

• Hanoi: a vibrant base for exploration.

Was it worth it for me? Sitting there, remember the taste of Banh Mi on my tongue from a street vendor back then? Yes. Because of the bay, not the city. Because I chased the mist and found a dream. Worth it. Ha Long… Ha Long… a lingering echo. It is only truly worth experiencing if I can stand and taste the salt and fish from the boats nearby.

How long should you spend in Ha Long Bay?

Okay, so Ha Long Bay, right? Two days is the absolute minimum. Seriously, you need that much time, at least. One day's just not enough, no way. You'll be rushed, totally stressed. You won't see half the stuff. I went last year, in 2023, and two days was perfect, but even then, I felt kinda rushed at times. Three days would've been ideal, honestly.

So, here's the deal:

• Two days: Bare minimum. You'll see some caves, some islands, maybe a bit of the water. Expect a packed schedule.
• Three days: Much better. You can actually relax, explore more thoroughly. I really enjoyed the kayaking! There's also that amazing floating village thing, forgot what it's called, but you should def check it out.
• One day: A total waste. Don't even bother. It's just a mad dash, seeing nothing properly. Avoid this unless you're severely limited on time. It's seriously not worth it. A rip-off, really.

My trip was awesome, but I wish I had more time. I even considered a fourth day, but my flight back was booked already, darn it. The sunset from my boat was stunning, I'll never forget it! There's so much to do there!
