Is Hanois Train Street Worth Visiting?
Hanoi's Train Street offers the unique experience of a train passing inches from buildings. It is a major tourist attraction, often resulting in large crowds and a commercialized atmosphere. Its value depends on whether a visitor prioritizes this spectacle over a less crowded, more local experience.
I was there on a sticky afternoon, around 4 pm in October 2022. Finding the right section of track was confusing, with people pointing us down one alley and then another. It felt less like discovering a hidden gem and more like being herded toward a single, specific event. The whole street was lined with cafes.
We paid 50,000 VND for an egg coffee at some little place and sat on tiny plastic stools. Everyone was just waiting. Its a strange feeling, being part of an audience for something that used to be just… daily life for the people who lived there. The residents were the ones directing us, telling us when to stand back.
Then the train came. It was loud and the ground shook and it passed so close you could feel the wind from it on your face, a big rush of air. But I mostly remember a sea of phones, everyone including me holding one up to capture the exact same moment. It was over in thirty seconds. A performance for us.
So was it worth it. I dont know. I have the picture, the proof I was there. But the memory itself feels a bit hollow, like I went to a theme park ride instead of experiencing a piece of Hanoi. It was definatly a thing to see, but not something I think I really felt.
