What counts as oversized baggage Shinkansen?

Navigating Oversized Baggage on the Shinkansen

Effective May 2020, the Shinkansen (Japan's high-speed rail network) has implemented new regulations regarding oversized baggage. Passengers are now required to pre-book designated luggage space for items exceeding the maximum dimension limit of a combined 160cm (62 inches).

What Constitutes Oversized Baggage?

Oversized baggage refers to any item that exceeds the following dimensions:

• Length: 160cm (62 inches)
• Width: 70cm (27.5 inches)
• Height: 55cm (21.5 inches)

Pre-Booking Oversized Luggage Space

Passengers traveling with oversized baggage must pre-book a designated luggage space. This can be done through the Japan Railways Group (JR Group) website or at any JR ticket office.

• Ticket Offices: Located at major stations and travel agencies

Consequences of Not Pre-Booking

Failure to pre-book oversized luggage space may result in travel restrictions. Passengers may be denied boarding or asked to repack their luggage to meet the size requirements.

Planning Ahead

To avoid any inconvenience, passengers are strongly advised to plan ahead and pre-book oversized luggage space in advance. This ensures a smooth and hassle-free journey on the Shinkansen.

Additional Tips

• Allow ample time for pre-booking, especially during peak travel periods.
• Pack light to avoid the need for oversized baggage.
• Consider shipping large items instead of bringing them on the train.
• Contact the JR Group if you have any specific baggage-related inquiries.
