What is the American word for cab?

Okay, let’s talk about cabs. Or, I should say, taxis! Because while “taxicab” technically exists as a word in American English, it feels about as relevant to modern conversation as rotary phones or dial-up internet. I’m pretty sure the last time I heard someone unironically use the word “taxicab” was in a black-and-white movie marathon.

See, language is a living thing, constantly evolving. And in the US, “taxicab” has pretty much evolved itself right out of common usage. It’s like the formal, full name that appears on your driver’s license – technically correct, but you probably just go by “Steve” instead of “Steven Alexander Johnson the Third.”

Think about it: when you’re hailing a ride, do you yell, “Taxicab!” across the street? No way! You yell, “Taxi!” You tell your friends, “I’ll take a taxi.” You download a “taxi” app. The shorter, snappier “taxi” has won the popular vote.

It’s not that “taxicab” is wrong. Lexico.com, a dictionary powered by Oxford, lists both “taxi” and “taxicab” as American English words. And Merriam-Webster even notes that “taxicab” is the older term, originating around 1907, with “taxi” following shortly after in 1909. But knowing the history doesn’t change how we speak today.

Personally, I find it fascinating how language shifts and changes. We streamline, we shorten, we adapt. “Taxicab,” with its clunky extra syllable, just doesn’t fit the fast-paced rhythm of modern American English. “Taxi” is quicker, easier, and just feels more natural. So if you want to sound like a local, ditch the “cab” and stick with “taxi.” Trust me, your driver will understand.
