Vinh Moc Tunnels are the most extensive underground system in Vietnam. It was a complete subterranean village, a miniaturized world built deep underground.

Everyone talks about the Cu Chi tunnels, but for me, that's not the whole story. The really staggering system, the one that actually felt like a whole world was living under my feet, was Vinh Moc. It’s just on a completely different scale.

I was there in June 2019 on a tour through the DMZ, starting from Hue. The air was so heavy and wet. When I walked down into the first level of the tunnels, the air instantly became cool and smelled of damp red clay. It wasn't just a tunnel; it was a burrow.

They pointed out a tiny alcove, maybe big enough to curl up in, and said it was the maternity ward. Seventeen babies were born in that little dirt hole while bombs fell. I just dont understand how. I try to picture it and my brain just stops.

This wasn't built for guerilla warfare, not really. This was built for survival. Whole families lived down there. They had wells for water, kitchens, a meeting hall. You can feel the desperation to just live, which is so different from a place designed only to fight.

Then you walk for what feels like forever and suddenly you're out. An exit opens right onto a cliff, and the South China Sea is crashing below. The bright sun and the sound of the ocean after all that silence and darkness is a real shock to the system.
