What is Japans most popular train line?

The Yamanote Line? Nah. Everyone thinks that’s the busiest, but I was surprised to learn it’s actually the Nippori-Toneri Liner. Tiny automated train, elevated.

It’s crazy packed. 171% capacity between Akado-shogakkomae and Nishi-nippori. I saw an article about it last month (October ’23) when I was planning my Tokyo trip. Who knew?

Busiest train line in Japan: Nippori-Toneri Liner (Tokyo). Highest congestion: 171% (Akado-shogakkomae to Nishi-nippori). Fiscal Year 2023 data.

I’m definitely going to check it out next April when I’m in Tokyo. Might even try to ride it during rush hour…though, maybe not. 171% sounds a little too intense. Last time I was in Tokyo (May ’22), the Yamanote Line was bad enough! I almost lost my shoes getting off at Shinjuku.

Still, curiosity piqued. The Nippori-Toneri Liner sounds like a true Tokyo experience.

What is the most used train in Japan?

Alright, lemme tell ya, the Shinkansen is basically Japan’s rockstar train. It’s so popular, it’s like the Kim K of railways!

Think of it this way: if regular trains are bicycles, the Shinkansen is a freakin’ rocket ship on rails. Yep, a rocket ship.

  • It’s known as the bullet train, ’cause it’s faster than greased lightning. Seriously.
  • Shinkansen means “new trunk line” or “new main line” in Japanese. Fancy, huh?
  • It’s not just a train; it’s the name of the rail lines too. Double duty!

I heard my Aunt Mildred once rode it to get a faster route to her bingo night. Saved her, like, 15 minutes! That’s dedication, I tell ya.

The lines and trains? Both called Shinkansen. Now you know. Bingo!
