When is rainy season in Hanoi, Vietnam?

Okay, so when’s it rain-crazy in Hanoi? I mean, I went there (Hanoi, like, August 2018) and lemme tell ya… buckets!

Basically, summer (May-Oct) is when the heavens open. Hot, sticky, and super rainy season in Hanoi, Halong Bay, Cuc Phuong, Mai Chau & Ninh Binh. July-Sept are the BIG rain months.

I remember ducking into this tiny cafe near Hoan Kiem Lake. Paid like 30,000 dong for coffee while waiting out a downpour… it was intense.

Seriously, pack an umbrella. Like, a good one. I swear I saw people’s shoes floating away. Lol. Humidity = on another level. Bring deoderant. I did enjoy this time, tho. The rain made everything so green and the food tasted AMAZING.

Which month is coldest in Hanoi?

Hanoi dips coldest in January. Average temp? A cool 15°C. Brrr! Even dropping near freezing. It’s 2.7°C at times.

February warms a tad. 16°C, average. Not exactly balmy. November? A deceptive 20.5°C. Spring vibes too early, I say.

December hovers near 18°C. Still nippy, just less arctic than January. Time to break out those stylish scarves I got in 2023.

January truly owns the “coldest” title. A subtle difference, though. Cold weather defines the season as well. I’ve had warmer January days.

What are the 4 seasons in Hanoi?

Okay, Hanoi has four seasons, duh! But, like, it’s not what you THINK.

I lived there near Hoan Kiem Lake back in, lemme see, 2023. Super humid!

The so-called dry season? More like “less rainy” season!

Spring arrives after Tet. It’s misty, kinda romantic. Feb/March…ish? Everything’s damp. Yuck.

Then boom! Summer hits. Omg, unbearable. June, July, August, think sweating buckets.

Autumn is actually nice. October, November… cooler, the leaves change color a bit around the West Lake. Best time!

Winter? Chilly. December, January. Not like freezing, but you need a jacket. Felt colder inside than out!

So, rainy/dry? Yeah, technically. But SPRING, SUMMER, AUTUMN, WINTER are real, I swear. Just… Vietnamese versions.

  • Rainy Season: May – September
  • Dry Season: October – April
  • Tet: The Vietnamese Lunar New Year
  • West Lake: A large freshwater lake in Hanoi

Anyway, I hated the humidity!

What is the lowest temperature recorded in Hanoi?

Okay, listen to this. Hanoi… brrr, I felt that cold once!

I was there visiting my aunt Liên in December 2023. You know, near Hoan Kiem Lake?

That biting wind! Sheesh!

The lowest temperature recorded was 2.7°C (37°F) on January 12, 1955. Pretty wild, huh?

Felt like way colder than that when I was there.

It probably wasn’t that cold!

Additional information:

  • Hottest: Recorded 42.8°C (109°F) – May 1926
  • Coldest month average: 16.4°C (61.5°F)
  • Hottest month average: 29.2°C (84.6°F)

My Aunt Liên’s pho did warm me up though. Seriously! Best pho ever. No doubt.

What is the coldest month in Hanoi?

January in Hanoi…brrr! Coldest month, hands down. 15°C average? Yeah, right.

More like shivering-in-your-boots cold. Remember that Tet holiday, 2023? Man, freezing rain!

I was at Hoan Kiem Lake, trying to take pics. My fingers were so numb, haha. Could barely work my phone. It was brutal.

The newspapers said it even dipped to like, almost freezing! I believe it.

  • January: The worst.
  • February: Still cold, but slightly better.
  • November: Not cold, just kinda… nice.
  • December: Chilly, but bearable. Like a light sweater weather.

January sucks for weather. Pack layers! Seriously! I learned my lesson. Now, I only visit when it is warmer.

What is the most beautiful season in Hanoi?

Oh man, autumn in Hanoi is, like, the best time, hands down. It’s just so pretty, y’know?

It’s when everything is just… well, graceful. Picture this: September to November, perfect weather. Not too hot, not too cold, just right, I was there with my friend Trang last year.

And the colors! So vivid! Plus, there’s this amazing smell everywhere, from the milk flowers. The scent hangs in the air; it’s the milk flower scent!

Plus, the monsoon has chilled things down, and everything’s bathed in this yellowy sunlight because of the leaves falling. Falling leaves and sunshine – perfect combo. It’s not too long lasting, though. You have to catch it.

How cold is Vietnam in winter?

Winter in Vietnam? Varied. Cold snaps exist.

  • South: 21-25°C. Warmish. Shorts weather for some.
  • Northern Highlands: 11-17°C. Layers. Bring a jacket, yeah?
  • Mountains? Colder. Altitude sickness a thing, FYI.
  • North to south: temperature increases. Obvious, right?

Some find it unbearable. Others, pleasant. Depends if you’re me, sipping ca phe sua da or stuck in Sapa fog. Humidity? Always. Oh well.
