What's Not Included in the JR Pass?

The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is a convenient and cost-effective way to travel by train throughout Japan. However, it's important to note that the pass does have some limitations and exclusions.

Non-JR Lines

The JR Pass is only valid on lines operated by Japan Railways (JR) Group companies, which include:

• JR Hokkaido
• JR East
• JR Central
• JR West
• JR Shikoku
• JR Kyushu

Therefore, the JR Pass does not cover non-JR-operated lines, such as:

• Odakyu Line
• Tokyo Subway
• Keio Line

If you need to travel on these lines, you will have to purchase separate tickets.

Certain JR Services

While the JR Pass covers most JR train services, there are certain exceptions that may require additional fares:

• Nozomi and Mizuho Shinkansen: These are the fastest bullet trains and require a surcharge.
• GranClass and Green Cars: These are premium seating options that also require a surcharge.
• Sleeper Trains: Overnight trains on the Sunrise Seto and Sunrise Izumo lines require an additional fee for a sleeping berth.
• Local Limited Express Trains: Some local limited express trains may have reserved seats that incur an additional charge.
