Where was Indias first railway line built?

Okay, so where did India's very first railway line actually run. It's funny, I was trying to pin down the exact details, and it gets a little hazy.

My understanding, from what I've gathered, is that the widely recognized first passenger railway, the one most people point to, opened in 1853.

This was a short stretch, just about 32 kilometers, connecting Bombay – that's Mumbai now, of course – to Thane. I've seen pictures of the old stations, they look so different.

But then, I found this interesting bit about an even earlier plan.

There was talk, way back in 1846, about building a line that would eventually link Calcutta, or Kolkata, all the way to Delhi. This was for the East India Railway Company, and they even had a map for the initial survey.

It's kind of wild to think about these early dreams of connecting the country, how they envisioned this massive infrastructure project.

It really does feel like a marker for the start of a more modern India, doesn't it.

So, while Bombay to Thane is the official "first," the idea of railways was brewing even before that.
