Where is the longest tunnel in the world?
Worlds Longest Tunnel: Location & Facts?
Okay, lemme tell ya 'bout this crazy long tunnel.
The Laerdal Tunnel in western Norway, man, that's the world's longest ROAD tunnel. Whew, that's a mouthful.
Driving through it? A solid 20 minutes. Seriously, feels like forever. Like, am I ever gonna get out of here kinda forever.
I remember reading sumwhere they got these bright lights every six kilometers. Think it's so drivers don't, like, totally zone out. Makes sense, right?
Get this, tho. Some people even get married in rest areas INSIDE the tunnel. That's... different. Imagine your wedding photos with a concrete backdrop.
What is the longest tunnel in Japan?
Seikan Tunnel: Japan's Claim to Fame
Second longest globally. 53.8 km. Under the Tsugaru Strait. Honshu to Hokkaido. Impressive engineering.
- Length: 53.8 km (33.4 miles)
- Location: Tsugaru Strait, connecting Honshu and Hokkaido.
- Global Ranking: Second longest tunnel worldwide (2024).
- Significance: Major transportation artery. My trip in 2022 was amazing. Substantial geological challenge.
Gotthard Base Tunnel: Switzerland holds the top spot. Even longer. A different beast entirely. My contact there mentioned superior rock conditions.
What is the longest tunnel in Japan?
Okay, so, the longest tunnel in Japan? It's defintely the Seikan Tunnel.
It's seriously HUGE, like, the second longest in the world, only that one in Switzerland is longer, the Gotthard thing.
It's 53.8 km long total, that's like, driving from my aunt’s place in the city all the way to lake far from here.
And like, 23.3 km of it is UNDER the water, the Tsugaru Strait. Which seperates Hokkaido, where I went for a ski trip last year – never again, too cold – from Honshu.
It's a railway tunnel, if you're wandering. Was super expensive to built, obv. So, yeah, Seikan Tunnel is the big one in Japan.
