Which country has the most train passengers?
Which country carries the most train passengers annually?
Okay, so, like, which country has the most train riders EVERY year?
China, hands down. In 2021, they had almost 9.5 BILLION train passengers. Like, whoa. That's according to the official numbers.
India was next, but a lot less, at about 2.3 billion, followed by Russia then France.
My train ride expereince? Well, I took the train from Vienna to Budapest back in October 2018. Cost around €40. Comfy, scenic, but not exactly packed like a Tokyo subway at rush hour I immagine. China's scale is HUGE.
Which country has the worlds largest passenger train?
Switzerland. Think cuckoo clocks, chocolate, and now, ridiculously long trains. Two kilometers? That's like a metal snake slithering through the Alps. Imagine the bathroom breaks. Poor conductor. 175 years of Swiss railways? They've clearly had time to practice this train-lengthening thing. RhB – they're showing off. Bet they celebrated with fondue afterward.
- Switzerland holds the record. (For now. Someone's probably plotting a longer train in Japan as we speak.)
- The train was TWO KILOMETERS long. (Try parallel parking that bad boy.)
- This happened in the Swiss Alps. (Because flat ground is so last century.)
- It was part of a 175th-anniversary celebration. (Overachievers.)
- Rhaetian Railway (RhB) organized the stunt. (They're the ones to beat, folks.)
My great-aunt Mildred once took a Swiss train. Got off in Zurich instead of Geneva. Blamed it on the cowbells. True story. Not sure about the cowbells part. Anyway. Swiss trains. Efficient. Scenic. And occasionally record-breakingly long. Imagine the catering bill for that thing. They probably needed a separate engine just to haul the cheese.
Which country has the highest rail usage?
Okay, lemme tell ya 'bout the time I tried to navigate the Shanghai metro... yeesh.
It was 2024, peak summer, and humid enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. My friend, let's call her Sarah, and I were trying to get from People's Square to... jeez, can't exactly recall the name now, some art district.
The sheer volume of people was insane! Legit 772.8 BILLION annual railway passengers, I bet at least half were there that day! Felt like being herded like cattle, but cattle who were also frantically waving their phones trying to scan QR codes.
Okay, maybe not literally 772.8 BILLIONthat day, but it sure felt like it. China takes the crown, no doubt.
Thinking about it…India’s pretty close. Like really close with 770 billion. Okay, so, Shanghai.
- Shanghai Metro, 2024, HOT!
- Sarah and I sweating buckets.
- Trying to find the right line.
- People everywhere.
- China's got the highest rail usage.
- India, hot on China's heels.
- Remember Japan is also one of the highest railway user
And that’s that. Also. don’t forget japan lol 255.9 billion. It's wild.
Where is the longest train ride in the world?
The Trans-Siberian. Moscow to Vladivostok. Eight days, seven nights. Brutal. Exhausting. Unforgettable.
- Distance: Approximately 9,289 kilometers. A monster.
- Duration: A week. Give or take.
- Scenery: Stunning, yet harsh. Siberia. Enough said.
- Practicalities: My 2023 trip: Prepare for extremes. Pack layers. Seriously.
This isn't a vacation. It's an experience. A test.
My personal note: Compartment #4, 2023. Still have the grime under my fingernails. Worth it.
Alternatives: There aren't many contenders. The sheer scale is unmatched. Period.
