Asias largest railway network: Which one?

Okay, so like, Asia’s biggest train network? I’m pretty sure it’s Indian Railways.

It’s HUGE! Like, “Wow!” big. It’s apparently the biggest in Asia and second biggest on earth, run by just one entity, I read someplace.

I remember being in India back in December 2018. Getting on a train at New Delhi station. So many people! I paid maybe 500 rupees (around $7-ish) for a sleeper berth. The scale of everything, trains, tracks, stations was overwhelming. I can’t imagine trying to manage it all.

Think about the sheer volume of trains! And all the tracks? It’s just nuts. It blows my tiny mind.

I messed up before, accidentally saying it was number 1. My bad. I blame my bad memory. Still, impressive.

Which is the largest network of railways in the world?

Ugh, railways… largest network? Hmm. Diary time!

  • United States… yeah, feels right. Always sprawling. Think it’s the US? Oh yeah.

  • 250,000 km. That’s the length, of the US one. Big number.

Is this the right number? It feels right.

  • China…Russia…India… they’re up there too. Right behind the US, for sure.

Am I forgetting someone?

Okay, so:

  • USA!
  • Then China
  • Russia
  • India

Sorted. I think.

Rail Facts

  • US rail is mostly freight. Think, like, long trains carrying stuff across states. Mom’s antique shop ships stuff by train.

  • China’s is super high speed. Remember seeing that bullet train doc? Crazy. The Shanghai Maglev is not part of it though.

  • Russia’s is crucial to connecting everything east and west. Really long. Trans-Siberian is cool.

  • India’s carries a lot of people. Packed trains, wow. Remember reading about that. That would be insane.

Which is the Asias largest iconic railway station?

Xiongan Station? Asia’s largest? Bless their hearts. Like calling a goldfish the king of the ocean. Impressive, sure, but perspective, people! Think sprawling, think epic – Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. That’s a behemoth. Navigating it is like exploring a lost civilization. I once spent a week there and only saw half of it. (Slight exaggeration. Maybe.) Xiongan is shiny and new, like a freshly minted coin. Give it a few decades, a few million hurried commuters, a couple of spilled bubble teas… then we’ll talk.

  • Shinjuku Station: Tokyo. Holds the Guinness World Record. Over 3.6 million passengers daily. Imagine that rush hour. Shibuya crossing looks like a tea party in comparison.
  • Grand Central Terminal: New York City. Not Asia, obviously. But worth a mention for sheer grandeur. Whispering Gallery? Celestial ceiling? Come on.
  • Beijing South Railway Station: Another contender. Massive. Modern. But does it have the chaotic charm of Shinjuku? Debatable.

My personal favorite? Hard to say. Depends on the mood. Like choosing a favorite sock. They all serve a purpose. Some are just more…adventurous. Once saw a guy in Shinjuku wearing socks with sandals. Peak comfort. Perhaps Xiongan will have its own sock-sandal enthusiasts one day. Time will tell. (And I’ll be watching.)

Which is the largest railway workshop in Asia?

Jamalpur. Asia’s colossus. Oldest, largest.

Established: Feb 8, 1862. Bihar. Munger district.

East India Railway’s pride. A singular achievement. I saw it once. Didn’t impress me. Just iron and sweat.

  • Location: Munger District, Bihar, India.
  • Foundation: East India Railway.
  • Historical Significance: First full railway workshop.
  • Currently: Still operational. Repair and manufacturing continue.
  • Size: Undisputed champion in Asia.
  • Personal Note: Overrated. I expect more. Always.

I’ve seen worse. Trust me on this one.

What is the rank of Indias largest railway network?

Fourth. Biggest in India, obvi. Owned by the government, Indian Railways. Crazy, right? They run it all. Think how many people, like millions and millions, use it every day. It’s massive. My uncle Sanjay, he works for them, like, near Delhi. Signals or something. Always complaining about the hours.

  • Fourth largest globally.
  • Indian Railways operates it.
  • State-owned.

My mom, she took the train from Mumbai to Kolkata once. Said it took, like, two whole days. Can you imagine? Two days! She brought back these awesome sweets. Sandesh, I think they’re called? So good. Anyway, Sanjay says they’re always trying to improve it, the network I mean. New trains, faster routes. Lots of construction. He says its a mess sometimes but, hey, progress, right? He always complains, complains. He actually just got a promotion, though. Signal supervisor or something. So maybe it’s not so bad after all. My family in Kerala…they usually fly though. Faster, you know?

What train station has the most platforms in the world?

Grand Central, that old chestnut, right? 44 platforms. More platforms than a disco dance-off. Like, seriously, imagine the platform shoes.

  • It’s in NYC. Midtown Manhattan, specifically. Where else would you find such organized chaos? My aunt Mildred lives two blocks away, never takes the train. Prefers taxis. Says it’s faster.
  • It’s HUGE. Bigger than my cousin Vinny’s apartment. And he has a pool table in his living room. True story.
  • It’s old. Been around since 1913. Older than sliced bread!
  • Two levels. Like a bunk bed for trains.

44 platforms, though. Beats counting sheep. You could lose a small child there. Actually, don’t do that. Security wouldn’t be happy. Nor would the child, probably. Imagine trying to find platform 43 at rush hour. My blood pressure just went up thinking about it.

Gotta love New York.

Which is the best train system in Asia?

Okay, so like, the best train system in Asia? Uhm, that’s gotta be Japan, hands down!

Their trains? Always on time! Like, seriously, always! And super clean! I hate dirty trains, yuck.

You just have to ride the Shinkansen, you know, the bullet train, when you’re ever in Japan. It’s amazing, it’s fast. They’re so quick!

My sister, she went to Tokyo last year, 2024, and she was like, totally blown away by how efficient everything was. She used to complain about our trains in Chicago, like all the time… but now she just sighs wistfully, lol.

Let’s break it down, I guess:

  • Punctuality: Super important, and Japan’s trains are the kings of being on time. No delays!
  • Speed: Shinkansen, obv. They’re insanely fast. No contest.
  • Cleanliness: Seriously, you can eat off the floors! (But don’t, haha)
  • Technology: The trains are just so advanced. I can’t explain it.

I think Korea has pretty good trains too, but not as good as Japan’s. Plus, I’m not a fan of Korean food, so Japan wins automatically. Just kidding… kinda! But seriously, it’s hard to beat the Shinkansen.

Which is the world highest railway line in Asia?

The Qinghai-Tibet railway? Oh, you mean that little train set that dares to tickle the sky.

It’s the highest railway line in Asia, reaching a dizzying 5,702m! That’s, like, higher than my dating standards! (Just kidding. Mostly.)

  • It’s a “miracle of engineering,” they claim. I bet my grandma could build a better one out of LEGO, but sure.

  • Nearly 2,000km of track stretches from Xining to Lhasa. That’s longer than my attention span on TikTok!

  • It crosses the Himalayan plateau. Imagine the selfies! Though, I’d probably just be airsick.

Is it impressive? Fine, maybe. It’s not like I’m jealous of a train. A train, I say!
