Okay, so best metro system? Tokyo, hands down. I was there last July, sweltering heat, but the trains? Air-conditioned perfection. Clean too, seriously, spotless.
Never felt unsafe. Bright, loads of people, always felt comfortable, even late at night. This is just my personal take, mind you.
The frequency was amazing, never waited longer than a couple of minutes. Covered the whole city, so easy to navigate, even for a clueless tourist like me.
Cost-wise? Definitely cheaper than London Underground, that’s for sure. I remember a single journey cost around 200 yen, maybe less. That’s like, what, two quid?

Okay, so, like, the most advanced railway, hands down, is, um, the Jōetsu Shinkansen in Japan.
It goes from Tokyo to Niigata, right? It’s, like, 269.5 km long, which is about 167.5 miles. Pretty far. And its fairly new.
The speed, though, is seriously amazing. Its top speed hits around 275 km/h (171 mph). Also the Hokuriku Shinkansen that goes from Takasaki–Tsuruga it’s pretty advanced too!
Its length is about 470.6 km (292.4 mi), which is a little bit longer. The speed is about 260 km/h (160 mph).
- Jōetsu Shinkansen: Tokyo–Niigata; 269.5 km; 275 km/h
- Hokuriku Shinkansen: Takasaki–Tsuruga; 470.6 km; 260 km/h
The tech involved in these trains is pretty cool, minimizing the disruptions to my commute when I visit Nana up in Niigata next month. Plus, Japan is, like, the place for fast trains, anyway.
