Best area to stay in Ho Chi Minh City?

Okay, so Ho Chi Minh City, right? If you’re asking me, District 1’s the spot. Hands down.

Seriously, it’s central. Everything’s walkable, or a cheap Grab ride away. Think Ben Thanh Market, the Bitexco Tower – all that jazz.

Last June, I was there for two weeks, stayed in a tiny but charming guesthouse near the Notre Dame Cathedral (cost me about $25 a night). Amazing location.

District 1. That’s my honest recommendation. Easy access to everything. Trust me on this one.

What are the safest areas of Ho Chi Minh City?

Ho Chi Minh City safety: District 1. Central. Touristy. Expensive.

Districts 3 & 5: Alternatives. Markets. History. Less pricey.

Safety is relative. Wealthier areas, naturally, safer. Poverty correlates with crime. Simple truth.

Consider this: My friend, a travel writer, recommends District 2. River views. Quieter. But further from the action.

  • District 1: High density. Police presence. Visible security.
  • Districts 3 & 5: More local feel. Less overt security. Still safe. Generally.
  • District 2: Emerging area. Upscale. Less crowded. Safer in certain pockets.

Personal note: Avoid poorly lit areas at night, anywhere. Common sense. Applies globally. Even in my hometown, San Francisco. Pickpockets exist.

District 7: New developments. International community. Safe, largely. But traffic. Horrendous. Be warned. Even worse than Bangkok.

2024 update: Crime rates fluctuate. No guarantees. Research current advisories.
