Which part of Vietnam snows?

Snow in Vietnam is rare, primarily found atop northern mountains. Sapa, Fansipan (highest peak), and Hoang Lien Son mountain range experience occasional snowfall during winter. Tam Dao also sees rare snow. These mountainous regions offer the best chance to witness this unusual Vietnamese phenomenon.

Where in Vietnam does it snow?

Okay, lemme tell ya 'bout snow in Vietnam. I never thought I'd be talkin' about snow there, y'know?

Northern Vietnam's the chilliest spot. I've seen pics, amazing.

During winter, the mountain peaks get a dusting. Tam Dao, Sapa, Mount Fansipan (that's a tall one), and Hoang Lien Son. Remember vaguely hearing about Fansipan being super cold in Decemebr one year.

Snow isn't a regular thing at all. But if you're lucky, you might catch some fresh powder in those places. Maybe I'll see it myself one day. Like January 2020, I remember friends in Sapa almost missed their bus cuz they were playing in the snow. Cost them, like, 50k VND for new tickets!

Which part of Vietnam is snowing?

Sapa.

It snows.

Up there, Hoang Lien Son. Mountains...

Sapa. The Hoang Lien Son mountains. They get snow. I saw pictures once. Or was it a dream?

The cold... always gets me. I can't handle it. I remember layers. So many layers. Just to feel okay.

  • Location: Sapa, Lao Cai province, Northwest Vietnam.
  • Mountain Range: Hoang Lien Son.
  • Climate: Subtropical highland, cool year-round, especially in winter.
  • Timing: Snow is most likely during the winter months (December to February). It's 2024. Still cold in those months. Probably still snow.
  • Why?: Topography. Altitude. It all mixes together. Snow.
  • My memories?: Fuzzy. Cold. Layers. Discomfort.
  • Personal Fact: My aunt went there. Said it was... something. Never really described it. Just something.

Yeah. Sapa. It gets snow. I know it does. It must. The cold... It reminds me of Sapa. Or what I think Sapa must be like.

Has it ever snowed in Hanoi?

No way! Snow in Hanoi? That's crazy. I always pictured it hot and humid. Never even crossed my mind. Seriously? Makes me wonder about other weird weather things. Like that time in 2023, the freak heatwave in my hometown, Portland. Brutal.

Hanoi snow is apparently a myth. I've looked it up. Google says nope. Unless you count that weird dust storm a few years back – that was epic.

My aunt went to Vietnam last year – she was in Saigon mostly, though. She didn't mention snow. Did she even go near Hanoi? Probably not. She’d have called.

Wait, maybe there’s microclimates. High up in the mountains, maybe? Worth exploring.

Research needed:

  • Hanoi's elevation & microclimates
  • Historical weather data for Hanoi (2023 & previous years)
  • Anecdotal evidence from expats living there
  • Mountainous regions near Hanoi and their weather patterns

Ugh, need coffee. And to stop procrastinating on this. This whole snow thing is distracting.

When can I see snow in Sapa, Vietnam?

Snow in Sapa, eh? That's like expecting a polar bear at a luau, but hey, miracles happen.

Usually, December to January is your best shot. I’d say it's prime time! That's when Sapa chills out so hard it might just sprout snowflakes. Think of it as Sapa deciding to try out its winter wardrobe.

  • When: December to end of January. Prime time, I tell ya!
  • Why: 'Cause that's when Sapa's trying to be Alaska.

But Vietnam's weather is about as predictable as a cat chasing a laser pointer. So, good luck! Maybe you will see snow. And maybe not.

  • It varies, though! Vietnam does what it wants.
  • Remember: It depends on Sapa’s mood, and maybe even the phase of the moon. It's the vibe, you know?
  • Consider this: Pack for anything. I'm talking shorts and a parka. Because why not?

Heck, I once saw a dude wearing Crocs in a blizzard in Minnesota. Anything's possible, apparently. So, yeah, December to January, fingers crossed! My birthday's around then so it could be a good sign.

What is the coldest it gets in Hanoi?

January... Yeah, January in Hanoi. It gets... cold. So cold.

It's not just the average. The average temperature of 15°C is a lie, almost.

Sometimes… it drops. Drops way down.

I remember the chill. Bone-deep.

2.7°C. That's what it can hit. 2.7 degrees. Freezing, damn near.

Coldest in January. Without a doubt. I hate January.

  • Always wear a jacket.

  • I hate the gloom.

  • Need a good blanket.

  • Wish the sun could stay longer.
