What taxi service works in Vietnam?

Ugh, Vietnam taxis. Mai Linh? Yeah, Mai Linh – used ’em tons. One time, Hanoi, 2023 (wait, is it 2024 now? whatever), I was lost near Hoan Kiem Lake. Phone DEAD.

Freaking panic mode. Hail this green taxi, Mai Linh.

The driver, Mr. Binh, didn’t speak great English. Still, he got me back to my hotel near the Old Quarter. Saved my bacon, really.

• Nationwide number: 1055, apparently, I never use it. I just wave ’em down!
• Color: Usually green, easy to spot.

Then there’s Vinasun. In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), Vinasun are EVERYWHERE.

Like, seriously, everywhere. One late night, after a pho binge near Ben Thanh Market.

Needed a ride back to District 1.

Vinasun was right there. Hotline: (028) 38 27 27 27. Never called.

• Color: White, with green and red stripes. Can’t miss ’em.
• Da Nang also has ’em, diff number tho: (023) 63 68 68 68

Taxi Group… Honestly? Never used ’em much. Heard they’re big in Hanoi, (024) 38 53 53 53, but never needed ’em.

G7 Taxi, maybe once? Hanoi again. (024) 32 32 32 32 or Saigon: (028) 38 16 16 16. Can’t really say. Didn’t leave much of an impression, know what I mean?

VinaTaxi, they exist, but… blurry memory. I stick to Mai Linh and Vinasun. Reliable-ish.

Ugh, the traffic tho. Taxi or not, Vietnam traffic is insane. Be ready for a bumpy ride!

Vietnam? Motorbikes, pho, and Grab. It’s the trifecta. Forgot to mention – Grab does food delivery too. GrabFood. Genius, really. Like ordering pizza, but with, you know, everything. Linh gets her banh mi delivered. Every. Single. Day. I told her she’s enabling a carb addiction. She just laughed.

• GrabFood: Fueling carb addictions nationwide.

• Motorbikes: The lifeblood of Vietnam. And Grab.

• Pho: Because everyone needs noodles.

  Once, she tried to order a ca phe sua da through Grab. Didn’t work. Tragic. Though, I’m not sure how they’d keep the ice from melting. Logistics, people. Logistics.

What taxis to use in Vietnam?

Ugh, Vietnam taxis, right? Ok, so, Grab is king. No doubt. I was in Saigon, hot sticky August, right? Needed to get from District 1 to District 3, you know, those crazy streets. Grab was super easy.

But! One time, it was Tet holiday, total madness. Grab app was surging like crazy, prices insane. Couldnt find anything!

That’s when a local, this old dude smoking a cigarette, told me about Vinasun and Mai Linh. He was like, “These guys, always reliable.”

Turns out, he was right. Vinasun saved my butt. Downloaded their app, easy peasy. Regular taxi, meter running, no surge pricing bs. It was awesome, actually.

So yeah, Grab first, Vinasun and Mai Linh for backup. Don’t get stuck like I almost did.

• Grab: Number 1 choice. Convenient app.
• Vinasun: Good backup option, reliable meter.
• Mai Linh: Another trustworthy company.
• Don’t even THINK about those random unmarked cars. Nope.
• Motorbike taxis: Uh, only if you’re feeling brave and haggling is your thing. I’m not.
• Always negotiate fares with motorbike taxis BEFORE riding. I learned that one the hard way.
• Be careful of scams, some drivers may try to take longer routes. Always keep an eye on the map.
• Learn basic Vietnamese phrases such as “Xin chào” (Hello), “Cảm ơn” (Thank you) to show respect.
