Which train station is best from Porto to Lisbon?

Porto to Lisbon by Train: Starting Your Journey Right

Planning a train trip from Porto to Lisbon? While the destination is clear, choosing the right departure station in Porto can save you time and hassle. The key to a smooth journey lies in understanding the Porto train network. While several smaller stations dot the city, the ultimate departure point for all Lisbon-bound trains is Porto Campanhã (CP).

This might seem confusing, especially with the iconic São Bento station frequently mentioned in Porto travel guides. While São Bento is indeed a beautiful and important station, it primarily serves regional lines. For long-distance travel, including the crucial Porto-Lisbon route, Campanhã is the main hub.

So, how does this impact your journey? If you find yourself at São Bento, don't worry! Frequent, short connecting trains run regularly between São Bento and Campanhã. This quick transfer allows you to admire the stunning azulejo tilework at São Bento before seamlessly continuing your journey to Lisbon.

Choosing to start your journey at Campanhã directly bypasses this extra step, maximizing efficiency. It's the most practical option, especially if you're traveling with heavy luggage or are pressed for time. Campanhã boasts a wider range of amenities, including larger waiting areas, cafes, and shops, making it a more comfortable starting point for a longer journey.

In short, while starting at São Bento offers a glimpse of Porto's artistic heritage, Campanhã is the true gateway to Lisbon. Plan your departure accordingly to ensure a smooth and efficient start to your Portuguese adventure.
