Will airlines hire a 50 year old pilot?
Yes, airlines can hire 50-year-old pilots. FAA rules in the U.S. only restrict pilots at Part 121 airlines (major commercial carriers) from flying after age 65. A 50-year-old pilot has 15 years to fly! They could even transition to other roles within the airline after that.
Will airlines hire a 50 year old pilot? Seriously, I’ve wondered this myself! Yes, absolutely they do. I mean, think about it – 50 isn’t that old anymore, is it? The FAA, here in the US anyway, only grounds you from flying for the big commercial airlines (the Part 121 ones, all the familiar names) after you hit 65. So, a 50-year-old pilot? They’ve got a good 15 years left in the cockpit! Plenty of time.
A friend of mine, he started his pilot career kind of late, you know? He was in his late 30s. He’s pushing 50 now and loving it. He figures he’ll fly ’til he’s 65, maybe then teach new pilots or something. There are tons of options within the airline, even after you’re not actively flying. So yeah, 50? No biggie. Still plenty of runway left. (Pun intended! Sorry, couldn’t resist.)
