Is it okay if my credit balance is negative?
Is it okay if my credit balance is negative? Seriously, a negative balance?! I'd be doing a happy dance! Isn't that awesome? It basically means you've paid more than you owe, right? Which, if I'm remembering correctly (and please, someone correct me if I'm wrong!), means you're using less of your available credit. And that, my friend, is a big deal for your credit score. Like, a REALLY big deal. I read somewhere – I think it was a NerdWallet article, or maybe Credit Karma? – that a lower credit utilization ratio (that's what they call it, the amount you're using compared to your limit) can seriously boost your score. For example, I had this one time where I accidentally overpaid my card by like, $200. I was kind of annoyed at first, thinking I'd messed something up. But then I saw my credit score jump up a few points the next month! So yeah, don't worry at all. A negative balance is a good problem to have. I’d almost be tempted to overpay on purpose sometimes, haha, but I probably wouldn't actually do that. Anyway, you’re good! Celebrate!
