What payment method does Vietnam use?

Vietnam is predominantly a cash-based society. While cash remains king, especially outside major tourist areas, card payments are gaining traction. Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in popular tourist destinations. For a smooth trip, carry both cash and cards.

What are the most popular payment methods used in Vietnam?

Okay, so Vietnam, right? Cash is king, seriously. Like, everywhere. Even small street food stalls, usually only cash.

But, in bigger cities, especially tourist traps like Hanoi's Old Quarter (July 2023, I was there!), cards are becoming more accepted. I used my Visa almost everywhere in those areas.

For smaller towns? Nah. Cash only. Remember that tiny village near Hoi An? (September 2022) Couldn't even use my card at the adorable little cafe. Think 50,000 Dong for a coffee.

So, popular payment methods: cash is still number one, no doubt. Credit/debit cards are catching up, but mostly in tourist zones. I'd pack plenty of Dong.

What are the payment methods for Grab?

Grab accepts varied payment options, catering to user preference. I usually go with cards since it's hassle-free, you know?

  • Credit/Debit cards: The ubiquitous choice.
  • Grab Driver (cash): Pay directly—simple as that. Very practical, especially in areas where card payments get spotty or you just feel like going old school. I do this when my card is acting up.
  • In-store payments: Some merchants accept GrabPay. It's handy when you are already in the app.
  • Online banking: Connect to your bank... modern problems require... you know. I have only done this once or twice.
  • ATM: Really? I haven't personally explored this one.

It's always adapting, changing and growing. The choices reflect a need to be flexible, I suppose.
