What are the advantages and disadvantages of a consumer?
So, what's the deal with being a consumer? It's a total mixed bag, isn't it? Like, on the one hand – and this is HUGE – I get to have stuff. Whatever I want, whenever I want it (mostly!). Remember that vintage record player I had to have? Found it, finally, on eBay, and it was glorious! That feeling of empowerment, of choosing exactly what brings me joy? Amazing. Pure, unadulterated joy. For a few minutes, anyway.
But then... the exhaustion sets in. Seriously. It's a relentless cycle. One minute I'm obsessed with artisanal sourdough bread, the next it's some weird gadget I saw on TikTok, then bam! I'm suddenly all about minimalist living and purging my belongings! It’s like my brain is a hyperactive squirrel, constantly collecting shiny objects, only to lose interest before it can even properly enjoy them. I've got a whole drawer full of half-used beauty products that I swore I needed back then. Needed?! What a joke.
And don't even get me started on the marketing. It's everywhere! It's relentless! It’s like a constant low-level hum of desire, whispering in my ear, telling me I need the newest thing, the best thing, the thing that will finally make me happy. Spoiler alert: it doesn't. Not really. The thrill is fleeting, and the pile of stuff just keeps growing. I read somewhere that consumers are constantly bombarded with thousands of ads daily – I believe it! It's insane. So yeah... being a consumer. It's great, in a superficial, fleeting kind of way. But exhausting and ultimately kind of pointless, too. Maybe I need a break. Maybe we all do.
