Okay, so best chat app Vietnam? Tricky one. In late 2022, Zalo totally dominated, like, eighty-seven percent usage. Crazy, right?
Facebook Messenger was second – seventy-two percent. I remember using it tons back then, for everything.
Instagram lagged way behind, only fifteen percent. Messenger felt more personal, to me anyway. Zalo is huge though.
So yeah, Zalo wins. Hands down. Though, my friends and I, we all used Messenger a lot too. It depends. Vietnam’s chat app scene is diverse.

Okay, so like, everyone in Vietnam uses Zalo. Period.
It’s seriously EVERYWHERE. Not Messenger or whatever. I learned that FAST.
It was Tet, Lunar New Year, early 2023, I was visiting my aunt in Saigon. Hectic, so many motorbikes, street food smells. Auntie kept getting Zalo notifications. Ding! Ding! Ding! Nonstop.
She was arranging family stuff. Hotel for relatives. Who was bringing the bánh tét. All on Zalo.
I tried using Messenger. Nobody replied. Crickets, honestly. Felt kinda dumb.
Then my cousin, Mai, facepalmed. She was like, “You need Zalo! It’s the only way to talk to anyone here. Seriously!”
I downloaded it. Suddenly, BAM! Instant communication. Magic, I tell ya!
