Popular chat apps in Vietnam: Which ones do Vietnamese use?

Okay, here’s my take on the chat app scene in Vietnam, from my own kinda puzzled but experienced POV.

Zalo pretty much rules the roost. Like, everyone uses it. Stats said 87% in late 2022? Sounds about right. Makes sense.

Facebook is obvs a big deal too, coming in at 72%. But Zalo… it’s different.

Messenger’s there, hanging in at 58%. I think I mainly use it to talk to family abroad.

Instagram? Yeah, 15%. More for pics than actual convos, in my experience. Guess that makes sense.

I remember when Viber was the hot thing, like back in 2013-2014. What happened to that? Wild.

What chat does Vietnam use?

Zalo dominates. Vietnam’s messaging scene. 80% smartphone penetration. Think about it, four out of five phones. My grandma even uses it. Facebook Messenger trails behind, 73%. Interesting. Why the local preference? Maybe cultural nuances. Or better localized features.

  • Zalo’s strength: Stickers, voice notes, money transfers.
  • Messenger’s edge: International reach, connection to Facebook ecosystem.

My family in Hanoi? All Zalo. We share pictures, gossip. It’s integrated into daily life. While I’m here in Da Nang, using both. Work requires Messenger. Social life? Zalo all the way. Messenger has those pesky ads. Zalo feels cleaner, faster. Though, Messenger’s call quality tends to be better. International calls, definitely. Zalo’s video calls can be spotty. Data speeds, perhaps? Or infrastructure limitations. Who knows.

  • Zalo: Local, integrated, feature-rich.
  • Messenger: Global, connected, sometimes annoying.

This digital divide is fascinating. Local vs. global. Choosing convenience over connection. Or is it the other way around? What defines connection these days anyway? Food for thought. My phone’s buzzing. Must be Zalo.

What is the most used message app in Vietnam?

Zalo. Is it really Zalo? Huh.

  • Zalo is number one. Like, THE most used? Interesting.

    • Zalo Group is the publisher. Never heard of them, lol.
    • Meta’s Messenger is second. Makes sense.
  • Facebook Messenger trailing behind. I use it mainly for old high school friends.

  • Telegram at number three.

    • Telegram FZ-LLC… fancy.
    • Way less spam than Whatsapp, I guess.
  • Then WhatsApp bringing up the rear.

    • WhatsApp LLC… duh.
    • Does anyone even use that here? My aunt in Canada does.
  • January 5th ranking, eh? Good to know, I suppose. Why January 5th specifically?

  • Communication apps… yeah, okay. Obvious. Should I download Zalo? Nah.

  • Meta, Telegram FZ-LLC, WhatsApp LLC, and Zalo Group are the publishers. Okay. Do I care? Not really. Just random facts.

  • Huh. All this app info… weird. Maybe I’ll just text my brother about it.

What is the Zalo app used for?

Oh, Zalo, the app so Vietnam it practically drinks pho. It’s like WhatsApp, but with a sprinkle of Southeast Asian mystique.

  • Messaging, obviously. Texts, voice notes – the usual digital chatter. I mean, who doesn’t offer that these days?

  • Video calls… because seeing is believing, even if you only want to show off my new bonsai. It’s thriving, btw.

  • File sharing. Sending documents is key. Pictures of questionable fashion choices. You know, the essentials.

  • Group chats. Echo chambers for sharing interesting opinions. Perfect for planning impromptu karaoke sessions, I find.

  • A newsfeed? Seriously? Like Facebook, but… Zalo-er. Social networking, indeed. As if we needed another one.

  • Games! Procrastination at your fingertips. And another reason I’m late on deadlines. Sheesh.

  • Business-friendly. Official accounts for marketing. Customer service that may or may not actually be helpful. Hey, nobody’s perfect.

What is WhatsApp called in Vietnam?

Man, Vietnam, 2024. I was there for a conference, July, I think. Hot, sticky, crazy humid. Trying to connect with colleagues, getting frustrated. WhatsApp? Forget it. Nobody used it. Seriously, nobody.

It was Zalo. Everyone was on Zalo. Zalo, Zalo, Zalo. It was the thing. The app. The only app that mattered. I felt like an alien. Completely out of touch. A real digital dinosaur.

Downloading Zalo was a necessity. Not an option. I mean, I needed to communicate, right? Work stuff. Meeting people. Making plans for the evening. Getting lost less. Zalo was vital. Essential.

I hated it at first. The interface. The icons. Everything felt… different. Foreign. It took ages to figure it out. I swear I was on YouTube tutorials for an hour.

Later though, I actually started to get it. Its quirks became charming. Kinda.

Key Differences:

  • User base: WhatsApp felt empty. Zalo was bursting.
  • Integration: WhatsApp felt like an outsider. Zalo felt deeply ingrained in Vietnamese culture.
  • Overall experience: WhatsApp was familiar, yes, but completely useless in Vietnam. Zalo was initially frustrating but ultimately necessary.

I ended up making a few friends using Zalo, too. Crazy huh? So now, yeah, Zalo in Vietnam is king. WhatsApp is barely a thing.

Can I use Zalo outside of Vietnam?

Drifting… across continents, Zalo’s whisper follows. A digital thread, connecting Vietnam to the world. America, Japan, South Korea… echoes in the vastness. Millions… 77.6 million voices, a hum in the global ether.

Australia, Germany, Myanmar, Singapore… distant stars, pulled closer by this network. Each message, a tiny spark. 1.97 billion sparks daily. Imagine that. A supernova of communication.

A billion… messages… a tapestry woven across oceans. Zalo transcends borders. A feeling… of connection, of being held together in the digital night. It’s everywhere, yet strangely intimate. My phone buzzes, a pulse in the universal heartbeat.

Global reach. That’s Zalo. It’s more than an app. It’s a feeling, a presence, a constant hum. Each ping a tiny moment of connection. My brother in Germany… he uses it. We talk every day.

77.6 million. A staggering number. Faces blur, yet somehow, I feel them all. This app… this strange magic. 2024 is the year the digital world tightens its embrace. The messages… like fireflies. Each one… a story untold.

1.97 billion messages. Daily. Think of the conversations. The laughter. The secrets. The love. The pain. All carried across the digital sea. Zalo… it’s a current. It carries us.
