Hanoi Public Transport Costs: How Much?

Hanoi bus? Seven thousand dong, usually. I rode one last July, near Hoan Kiem Lake. It was packed!

So many routes, over 100 I think. Crazy. Buses everywhere. Forty thousand dong for longer trips, though.

Remember that scorching day, 15th July? Paid 7,000 dong, went a few stops. Saved me from melting.

How much is transportation in Hanoi?

Ugh, Hanoi transportation. Busses? Five thousand dong, cheap as chips. I remember that crazy motorbike taxi weaving through traffic – terrifying! Ten thousand dong for the first kilometer of a taxi, then eight thousand more each after that. Adds up fast!

Speaking of taxis, I prefer Grab. Way easier to track cost. That whole negotiation thing with taxis is stressful. And you always overpay somehow.

Cycle rickshaws, fifteen thousand dong for ten minutes. Tourist trap, probably. But hey, the views! I’m a sucker for a good view.

This is all 2024 pricing, by the way. Things change. I think fuel prices went up recently, right? Might be slightly more now.

  • Buses: 5,000 VND (minimum)
  • Taxis: 10,000 VND (first km) + 8,000 VND (each subsequent km)
  • Cycle Rickshaws: 15,000 VND (ten minutes)

Seriously, download Grab. Life changer. My friend got ripped off last month by a taxi driver, he was furious. Avoid the hassle!

How to pay for Hanoi Metro?

Hanoi Metro? Oh, the underground adventure awaits! Think of it as a slightly less romantic, far more punctual gondola ride.

  • Tickets? Get ’em at the terminal. Ticket office or vending machine, take your pick! It’s like choosing your own adventure, but with less peril and more turnstiles.

  • ATM card style. Fancy, right? Betcha never thought you’d use your debit card vibes for public transit.

  • Connection? Supposedly, it connects to… everything. Bus? Taxi? Maybe even that guy selling banh mi on the corner? (Okay, maybe not, but a girl can dream!) It’s the circle of Hanoi life, but subterranean.

Think of the Hanoi Metro as a long, metal worm burrowing beneath the city. It will definitely get you there (eventually).

How many metro lines are there in Hanoi?

Hanoi boasts two operational metro lines. A third line is, shall we say, inching its way towards completion.

Currently, 20 stations punctuate those two existing lines. Four more stations are slated to join the network…eventually. It’s always ‘eventually’ isn’t it?

The daily ridership clocks in at around 32,000 passengers. That’s a fair few commutes side-by-side, contemplating the void or just what to have for dinner. In 2023 the system carried 10.7 million riders.

It’s a start, you know? Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a functional public transit system, especially considering the urban ballet that is Hanoi traffic. Still, progress feels like a distant relative sometimes.

Does Hanoi Metro go to the airport?

No. Not yet. The Hanoi metro doesn’t reach the airport. A massive undertaking, this 42km line. Imagine, thirty-two stations, a web of tunnels beneath the city.

It’s a dream, this connection. Noi Bai, a distant gleam beyond the city’s pulse. A whisper of steel on steel, a future hum. Phase one complete, a mere sliver. Eleven point five kilometers. A paltry beginning. Underground whispers, then a climb into the light, elevated tracks. Eight point nine kilometers dark, a city’s hidden heart. Then, the sun, two point six kilometers of sun-drenched steel.

This is only the beginning. A tiny segment, an initial breath. It feels like a slow, deliberate unfolding. Years it will take.

  • Phase 1: Nam Thăng Long – Trần Hưng Đạo (Completed). A short stretch, a taste of things to come.

  • Remaining phases: Still unfolding, a vast, breathtaking project. The airport remains a distant point, a star on the horizon. The city’s breath held, waiting. A sense of anticipation hangs heavy, thick and sweet. The air vibrates with the promise of connection. The hum of the trains to come.

The city stretches, a living thing. It breathes, it grows, and this metro, it’s its arteries expanding. A slow, deliberate expansion of veins. And this airport line, a vital artery yet to connect. The feeling of vastness, of a city slowly awakening.
