Is Laos Affordable for Tourists in 2024?

Laos in 2024? Affordable? Yeah, I’d say so, from my own travels, anyway. Loads to do, and much of it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

I spent, like, next to nothing when I was there.

For budget-conscious travellers, Laos is a dream.

Back in June 2018, I remember haggling for a tuk-tuk ride in Luang Prabang, ended up paying maybe 15,000 kip (about $1.50 USD) for a pretty decent trip, that’s me, good negociate.

The street food? Delicious and dirt cheap. Seriously, a bowl of noodle soup cost me less than a dollar. Can’t beat that.

Accommodation varied, of course. I splurged on a nicer guesthouse one night, cost me around $20. Others, I found simple rooms for maybe $8.

So yeah, Laos is totally doable on a budget. You can experience so much without breaking the bank. Just be ready to haggle a bit and embrace the local culture!

How much should I budget for a trip to Laos?

Laos, eh? Seven days? Well, budget like you’re scaling Mount Everest, but with tuk-tuks instead of yaks.

  • Cheap Charlie: $500-$800. Think instant noodles and guesthouses simpler than my dating life.
  • Middle of the Road Roamer: $800-$1500. Upgrades to better grub and places to crash that maybe have AC.
  • Luxury Larry: $1500+. Go wild! Private villas, fancy feasts. You might even meet a monk who gives stock tips.

That’s if you’re not like me. I’d probably drop $2000 because I have no impulse control when it comes to street food and elephant pants. Oops. Budget is more like a suggestion, right?

More info!

  • Shopping: Silks, crafts. Bargain HARD.
  • Transportation: Tuk-tuks are fun, but agree on a price before you hop in, or you will be paying for it.

  • Time of Year: Dry season: pricey. Rainy season: cheap(er), soggy. Pick your poison!
